Roosevelt agrees with Root about the proposed Reynolds Commission’s excellence.

Robert Erskine Ely thanks Frank Harper for his letter and says the announcement for Theodore Roosevelt’s address at Carnegie Hall has gone out as Harper Suggested. Dr. Albert Shaw will not return from Europe before Roosevelt’s address; Ely asks Harper to suggest someone else to be the chairman, who will also be expected to give an introduction for Roosevelt.

Elisha Ely Garrison was shocked by Secretary Cortelyou’s letter about the committee not having funds to pay for his recent edition of The Roosevelt Doctrine, since Garrison considered it “a labor of love” and the publisher offered it to the committee at nine cents a copy. Garrison had no role in the publisher attempting to sell the book to the committee. Garrison is happy to compile another book of Roosevelt’s messages and speeches.

John Hay writes to Theodore Roosevelt to tell him that P. M. Mattheeff, Commissioner to the World’s Fair from Bulgaria, will be calling with a letter of introduction from Dr. Shaw and a letter from the Prince of Bulgaria.

Assistant Treasurer at St. Louis Thomas J. Akins informs President Roosevelt that he has complied with Roosevelt’s recent letter regarding the letter from Dr. Albert Shaw, and that the letters will not be published. Akins tells Roosevelt that he has worked to guard the interests of the Republican party during the present election, and believes that Roosevelt should have no problems winning a national victory. He hopes that his actions have been enough to add Missouri’s electoral votes to Roosevelt’s total, and feels that the Republican Party is in a better position in Missouri now than it has been in the past.

Collier hopes to be able to make it up to Roosevelt after his reelection to show that the Weekly does not hold the sorts of hostility towards Roosevelt that has been exhibited in the recent letters of Samuel Hopkins Adams.

Akins does not believe that Dr. Albert Shaw’s letter is in the possession of any member of the Missouri Republican State Committee, but will do his best to see if he can locate it. Akins has worked to bring the Republican party of Missouri together, and believes there will be a large increase in voters in the upcoming election. While he is not sure if President Roosevelt will win the state he has a chance of doing so. In a handwritten postscript Akins notes that he has just received Roosevelt’s letter, and will follow the instructions.

President Roosevelt has an ongoing dispute with Dr. Albert Shaw of the Review of Reviews over whether or not Roosevelt said that Missouri gubernatorial candidate Cyrus Packard Walbridge is a better man than opposing candidate Joseph Wingate Folk. Roosevelt insists he said no such thing, and Shaw insists he did. Roosevelt sends a copy of a letter he received from Shaw to Collier. Roosevelt wishes not to discuss any of this in public, especially concerned about the misrepresentation of his political views.
