President Roosevelt tells William Wingate Sewall that if he were going to bring anyone, he would be pleased to have Sewall’s son accompany him to Africa. As it stands, however, he is only taking Kermit and two professional naturalists and field taxidermists. There would be nothing for the son to do as the natives provide the physical labor.

President Roosevelt asks Customs Collector Sewall to wait until next winter to come to Washington, D.C. Although Roosevelt would enjoy a hunting trip, it will likely not happen soon, and the boys are now at school during the year. The maple sugar Sewall sent has been appreciated by the Roosevelt family.

William Wingate Sewall, Collector of Customs at Aroostook County, will be sending President Roosevelt some maple sugar. Sewall hopes Roosevelt’s boys can come deer hunting soon, and he describes the camp he has built at Hook Point with his son Fred Sewell. Major General Henry C. Merriam and Civil Service Commissioner Charles Lyman have recently visited. If Roosevelt is too busy to visit Maine, Sewell might be able to come to Oyster Bay.

Mattison draws from a number of sources, including books, letters, photographs, and interviews to try to give a complete picture of the ranch and its activities.

Since he last wrote, William Wingate Sewall has a new son. Mary Alice Sherman Sewall and the boy are doing well. There are 250 cows on the ranch and, even though some of them do not have calves, their herd is doing the best out of any along the Little Missouri River.
