Too far gone, John!–That balloon will never rise again

Joseph B. Foraker holds a hot air balloon fashioned from shirts stitched together and labeled “Bloody Shirt” with the initials “J. G. B.” for James G. Blaine. John Sherman leans over a small pot labeled “Sectional Hatred” that is fastened to the bottom of the balloon (the basket and anchor has been discarded in the background), attempting to generate enough hot air to get the balloon off the ground by using a bellows labeled “Stump Speeches” to fan a fire in the pot. A notice pasted on a fence on the right states “John Sherman’s Mt. Gilead Speech.” A portion of the text states, “The Solid South, held together in political fellowship by crimes, violence and fraud.”

Peace, and the good will of all men

A large group of men are gathered around a monument to bust Ulysses S. Grant that includes “Grant’s Last Letter.” Some of the men are laying wreaths at the base, labeled “Southern Soldiers, Northern Soldiers, Our Friend, [and] Old Soldiers.” Some of the men are labeled “Capital, Labor, Republican, Democrat, Irish, [and] German.” Standing in the background, separate from the others, are William M. Evarts, Whitelaw Reid, James G. Blaine, John A. Logan, George M. Robeson, and another man. Caption: Another lesson for the “Bloody Shirt” patriots.

Harmony and envy

Three monks, Whitelaw Reid, James G. Blaine, and John Logan, walk a few steps ahead of a band of merry revelers composed of Puck, Puck’s figure for the “Independent” party, President Cleveland labeled “Reformed Bourbon” with a woman on the right labeled “North” and a woman on the left labeled “South,” and an African American man. Reid carries a sack labeled “Bloody Shirt” and “Irreconcilable Editorials” and Logan is reading “Paradise Lost.”

James G. Blaine and John Logan stand next to a grave as Whitelaw Reid places a wreath labeled “To the Memory of Discord” on the grave. The tombstone states, “To the Memory of Sectional Strife Buried Nov. 4th 1884.” Caption: This decoration day will give our Blainiac friends a good opportunity to recognize an established fact.

The South and the national democracy

Newspaper article arguing that Southern Democrats need to support a presidential candidate that can win a national election. If they do not, continued Republican control of the national government will lead to more anti-Southern policies. The only nationally viable Democratic candidate is Grover Cleveland and the South must decide between “Clevelandism and Rooseveltism.”

Letter from John Grant to the Editor

John Grant was removed from the United States Marshals Service by President Roosevelt and would like the Editor to publish his defense. He feels that this defense is politically important for the Southern states. He wants the entire letter published, and tells the editor not to publish the letter in part.

Letter from A. H. Whitfield to Theodore Roosevelt

Judge Whitfield commends President Roosevelt for his actions since succeeding to the presidency, particularly his treatment of the south and his appointment of former Governor Thomas Goode Jones as District Judge in Alabama. Whitfield suggests that Roosevelt build the Nicaragua canal, select the best men for judicial openings, avoid appointing African Americans in the south, and appoint Democrats to southern positions.

Letter from Thomas Nelson Page to Theodore Roosevelt

Thomas Nelson Page is comforted that the presidency and nation are in President Roosevelt’s hands. The country is behind Roosevelt. His broad sympathies and qualities offer a great opportunity to bring north and south together and remove sectionalism.

Letter from William P. Trent to Theodore Roosevelt

William P. Trent thanks Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt for his letter regarding Trent’s recently published biography of William Gilmore Simms. Trent discusses what he learned from reading southern antebellum literature from the period of the Civil War and his views on the problems with sectionalism in the South. He admits that his voice will likely not be heard beyond the classroom.
