Lately, Lummis has been receiving “nice reminders” from those involved in the Apache Wars. Lummis attaches a signed photograph of himself and would like Roosevelt to send one of himself.

Report from Albert Gleaves to Joseph Bullock Coghlan

Lieutenant Commander Gleaves reports to Rear Admiral Coghlan on his meetings with the Native peoples in the Mandingo Harbor area, Gulf of San Blas, where he had done his previous expeditions. He continued scouting and mapping where they had left off on the previous expedition. Gleaves also reports that the Rio Diablo Indians continue to be friendly, and have met and decided to support Panama, and end relations with Colombia. Gleaves’s men are finishing mapping the Gulf of San Blas, and sailing directions will be available soon.

Lieutenant Manwaring reports in great detail about his assignment to explore the Old Panama Trail, and where the trail from Nobre de Dios joins it. Manwaring, writing a day-by-day account of the expedition, details distances and direction traveled each day, obstacles, and the importance of having local guides. The local guides pointed out where Colombian troops would be camping, what rivers the Colombians would need to traverse, and generally very detailed intelligence. The report closes with a summation of the terrain and attacking and defense possibilities at drier times of the year.
