Gregory A. Wynn charts the history of three rhinoceros inkwells connected to Theodore Roosevelt. One belonged to Roosevelt and has a prominent place on his desk at Sagamore Hill and two others were gifts from Roosevelt to John Callan O’Laughlin and Lawrence F. Abbott, both of whom accompanied Roosevelt on parts of his African safari and European trip in 1909-1910. Wynn notes the manufacturers of the inkwells, their provenance, and he situates them in the context of Roosevelt’s love of big game hunting.

The “Book Reviews” section examines two books in detail while providing short notices of five others under the heading “New Books of Interest.” Matthew J. Glover reviews Selwa Roosevelt’s chronicle of her seven year stint as Chief of Protocol for the United States during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. New books given brief notices include a study of President Theodore Roosevelt’s diplomacy in the Caribbean basin and an examination of Roosevelt as a speaker. The section also notes the publication of a paperback version of Sylvia Jukes Morris’s biography of Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt and a paperback of Theodore Roosevelt’s Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter. The section praises James F. Vivian’s collection of Theodore Roosevelt’s speeches in North Dakota and closes with a review of William Davison Johnston’s history of the Oyster Bay, New York, Presbyterian Church.

Four books are scrutinized in this edition of the “Book Reviews” section. A catalog to the Theodore Roosevelt film collection at the Library of Congress is discussed, and the review notes how the collection was assembled, how the catalog is organized, and it highlights other Roosevelt collections and their printed guides. Kenneth D. Crews reviews two historical novels about Roosevelt, Bully! by Mark Schorr and The Big Stick by Lawrence Alexander. Crews finds more entertainment value in Schorr’s book, and he asserts that both titles cater to simplistic and stereotyped views of Roosevelt at the expense of a carefully crafted character. John A. Gable examines Theodore Roosevelt: Wilderness Writings edited by Paul Schullery, and most of the review focuses on, and quotes extensively from, Schullery’s introduction. Gable notes that Schullery tackles the thorny issue of Roosevelt’s hunting, and he describes how the book is organized.

Advertisement and order form for seven books from Peregrine Smith books. Theodore Roosevelt: Wilderness Writings edited by Paul Schullery dominates the advertisement, and it is also included in a five volume Literature of the American Wilderness set. The two page advertisement features a one page excerpt from Roosevelt’s writing about the bighorn sheep which is reproduced in cursive handwriting intermixed with a drawing of Roosevelt, pen in hand, and a drawing of three bighorns. The second page of the advertisement depicts the covers of the books, has summaries of each title or collection, and includes the order form.

This edition of “News and Notes” has five sections. Brief histories of the three ships and one submarine that have carried the name of Theodore Roosevelt are provided in “The Aircraft Carrier Theodore Roosevelt.” This section also highlights the five different Roosevelts who have served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. “TR Exhibit at the LBJ Library in Texas” revisits the Theodore exhibit at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum. It lists fourteen of the archives, museums, and historic sites that lent items to the exhibit, and it promotes the sale of the exhibit catalogue and poster.

“Meadowcroft” covers a July 1903 visit by Roosevelt to the home of his cousin John Ellis Roosevelt on the south shore of Long Island. It also relates the events surrounding “Theodore Roosevelt Day at Meadowcroft” on July 28, 1984, which celebrated and recreated President Roosevelt’s visit. “Rough Riders Museum in New Mexico” examines why there is a museum dedicated to the Rough Riders in Las Vegas, New Mexico. It looks at the state’s contributions to the regiment and highlights some of the reunions held in Las Vegas.

The final and untitled section notes events involving the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and its work: the conferring of a TRA award to a high school student, a radio interview of the TRA’s Executive Director John A. Gable, and a listing of programs at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace and Sagamore Hill National Historic Sites.

This edition of the “News and Notes” section is mostly devoted to the various activities, celebrations, and commemorations marking the 125th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt’s birth. The section lists some of these celebrations and includes more details about the “Roosevelt Renaissance” held at Theodore Roosevelt Island in June 1983. The section reviews the May 1983 meeting of the American Forestry Association which marked the seventy-fifth anniversary of Roosevelt’s Conference on Conservation, and it devotes parts of four pages to a visit to Medora, North Dakota, by members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). It also recommends five books about Roosevelt.

The section has a photograph of the TRA group in Medora, North Dakota, and three photographs of members of the TRA with the Governor of North Dakota, Allen I. Olson. An illustration of Roosevelt in his buckskin hunting outfit and a montage of Roosevelt with images of the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace and Sagamore Hill National Historic Sites are also found in the section.

This four page edition of “News and Notes” is divided into six sections and is mostly concerned with a series of celebrations and commemorations of the 125th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt’s birth. The article details the celebrations held in Indianapolis, Indiana, in New York State in New York City, Oyster Bay, and Buffalo, and at Harvard University. The Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace hosted events as did the American Museum of Natural History. Oyster Bay held a parade while the Indianapolis gathering saw the planting of a tree at the home of Roosevelt’s Vice President, Charles W. Fairbanks. The meeting at the American Museum of Natural History saw the awarding of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to four recipients. A dinner was held in Buffalo while at Harvard, John Morton Blum gave a lecture.

The article also discusses the 1983 Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public high schools held at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace, and it details the premiere of the documentary film The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. “News and Notes” closes with an obituary for Helen M. MacLachlan who worked for both the Theodore Roosevelt Association and the National Park Service at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace in New York City.

Roosevelt provide separate but equally laudatory reviews of American Bears, a collection of writings about bears and bear hunting by Theodore Roosevelt edited by Paul Schullery. Kenneth D. Crews finds that Roosevelt plays a minor, but important, role in Carlton Jackson’s The Dreadful Month about the awful death toll in American coal mines in December 1907. John A. Gable examines Paul D. Casdorph’s Republicans, Negroes, and Progressives in the South, 1912-1916 and compares some its findings to his own work on the Progressive Party.

Five book reviews on six different books comprise this edition of the “Book Notes” column. In his review, Richard H. Collins focuses on Kathleen Dalton’s contribution to Robert J. Brugger’s Our Selves/Our Past, Psychological Approaches to American History. Dalton embraces a psychohistory approach to understanding Theodore Roosevelt, emphasizing his commitment to overcoming his childhood asthma and living the strenuous life. Collins argues that this approach is misguided and ignores Roosevelt’s class and his formidable intellect. Patrick C. Gable commends John Morton Blum for his appraisal of Roosevelt in The Progressive Presidents, but he faults him for blaming Roosevelt for the misdeeds and excesses of his Democratic successors.

Peter R. Fischer finds Charles C. Goetsch’s Essays on Simeon E. Baldwin “a worthwhile collection,” but he thinks the confrontation between Roosevelt and Baldwin over a federal labor law may not merit the importance that Goetsch assigns it. Elizabeth E. Roosevelt praises Mary Helen Dohan’s Mr. Roosevelt’s Steamboat for its depictions of life along the Mississippi River and for not overlooking the contributions of Lydia Latrobe Roosevelt to her husband’s success. Dennis Wood reviews Paul Schullery’s The Grand Canyon and Old Yellowstone Days. Theodore Roosevelt has an essay in each of these collections of writings about iconic American landscapes.

Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association covers a variety of subjects in this installment of “Notes.” He sends birthday greetings to Alice Roosevelt Longworth on her ninety-fifth birthday and talks about her fame as a daughter of President Roosevelt and a hostess in Washington, D.C. He notes the anniversary of a Long Island bank with ties to Theodore Roosevelt, a PBS Christmas series with an episode on Roosevelt, and a running group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, named in honor of Roosevelt. Gable discusses two scholarly articles published on Roosevelt: one on his connection to Yellowstone National Park and the other on his naval policies. He thanks the National Park Service for publishing Sagamore Hill, a pamphlet marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the site as a house museum, and closes by asking Theodore Roosevelt Association members to recruit new members to the group in 1979.
