Robinson asks whether Roosevelt is leaving in May for a hunting trip, and if so, how long he will be away from Washington.

A. Richard Boera tells the story of Fulop Laszlo’s portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt which was painted at the White House in March 1908. Most of Boera’s text comes from a biography of Laszlo published in 1939, and it includes long passages from Laszlo describing his interactions with Roosevelt, sketching a portrait of Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, and vignettes of life at the White House. Boera’s article in its text and its endnotes also discusses the 1903 John Singer Sargent portrait of Roosevelt.
Four color portraits painted by Laszlo, including those of the president and the first lady, appear in the text.
A photograph of Winthrop Roosevelt looking at John Singer Sargent’s portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt in the White House appears on the front cover, and a photograph of President Roosevelt in a dynamic speaking pose from 1902 is featured on the back cover.

David H. Burton provides biographies of three Roosevelt women: Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Burton emphasizes Edith Roosevelt’s importance to her husband, Theodore Roosevelt, from raising their children to overseeing the renovation of the White House. With Longworth, Burton notes her marriage to Nicholas Longworth and her antipathy to Franklin D. Roosevelt, and he says that her influence suffered because “she was never for anything.” Burton highlights Eleanor Roosevelt’s sad childhood but pays attention to, and praises, her considerable humanitarian work both as First Lady and in her later life.

This third installment of “The Roosevelt Family in America: A Genealogy” includes part three of the genealogy as well as an introductory note explaining its publication order and instructions on how to navigate its various parts. An index to all three parts of the genealogy appears at the end of this issue. Part two of the genealogy is labeled as an appendix on “Jacob Rosevelt and His Descendants” and provides a history of the descendants of Jacob Rosevelt, an eighteenth-century German immigrant and includes eighty-one entries, featuring brief biographical portraits of each entrant, along with their birth and death dates, and a listing of their children.
Part two of the genealogy also includes in this order: a text box on “Pronunciation of Roosevelt”; a full page photograph of Henry L. John A. Gable reviews two works in the “Book Reviews” section. Gable praises James B. Reckner’s history of the Great White Fleet and notes that the work favors the military and technological aspects of the cruise, and he emphasizes that the cruise served as an important test for the navy in many respects. Gable also favors Louis Auchincloss’s The Vanderbilt Era: Profiles of a Gilded Age which looks at how the fortune of the Vanderbilt family helped shape American art and architecture in a quest to create an “American Renaissance.”
Two photographs appear in the section: one of Reckner and one of the USS Theodore Roosevelt underway in the Mediterranean Sea with other ships of her battle group and planes from her air wing.

Excerpts from the diaries of First Lady Edith Kermit Roosevelt edited by A. Richard Boera. The excerpts are taken from eight different years and most of the entries are short. Some of the most common topics include the various health issues of the Roosevelt family, lists of guests for lunch and dinner at the White House, and the riding excursions of Edith and Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt’s assuming the presidency after President William McKinley’s assassination, the final days of Roosevelt’s presidency, and the tour of Europe after Roosevelt’s African safari in 1910 are also covered.
A photograph of Edith Roosevelt in 1901, a drawing of her by John Singer Sargent in 1921, and a family portrait of Edith and Theodore Roosevelt with all of their children at Sagamore Hill in 1903 supplement the text. A listing of the officers of the Theodore Roosevelt Association along with the members of its executive committee appears on the second page of the excerpts.
This article describes a visit to the White House by a delegation from the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to present a set of the Memorial Edition of the Works of Theodore Roosevelt to President Jimmy Carter and his wife to be placed in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. The article lists the members of the delegation, provides information about the Roosevelt Room and the donated books, and describes the interaction between Ethel Roosevelt Derby and the Carter family.

President Roosevelt’s cousin, William Emlen Roosevelt, reports on the recovery of his mother, Elizabeth Norris Emlen Roosevelt. William Roosevelt mentions the service pension scheme. He is sending the president John Singer Sargent’s portrait etchings to him for inscription.

Francis R. Appleton asks President Roosevelt to inscribe two etchings of John Singer Sargent’s portrait of Roosevelt. One copy is for Appleton’s collection of presidents’ portraits and the other is for Harvard’s Porcellian Club. Appleton also sends three copies for Roosevelt to own.

Victor Geza Fischer encloses a telegram from Collier’s Weekly requesting that no photographs be taken of John Singer Sargent’s portrait of President Roosevelt until the magazine has been published. He suggests that he should keep the painting until then, rather than sending it to the White House, as he can better control access to it.
