Nicole E. Goldstein recounts the activities undertaken and speeches given at the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the dedication of the Theodore Roosevelt memorial on Theodore Roosevelt Island on October 29, 2017. Goldstein lists the numerous events, highlighting the efforts of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), the Friends of Theodore Roosevelt Island, and the President of the D.C. Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution, Thomas Misiano, who designed discovery kits for visitors to the island to educate them about Roosevelt. Goldstein also summarizes her speech as well as those of Alexcy Romero of the National Park Service, historians John Milton Cooper and Clay Jenkinson, and Tweed Roosevelt. Goldstein concludes her report by touting Roosevelt’s conservation record and giving a brief history of Theodore Roosevelt Island.

William N. Tilchin announces that this issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal features two new columns by Susan Sarna and Richard Marschall which focus on items from the collection at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site and on political cartoons depicting Theodore Roosevelt. Tilchin also notes that an upcoming issue will inaugurate an additional column by Nicole E. Goldstein centered on Theodore Roosevelt Island, and he notes that this issue focuses on Roosevelt, his son Quentin Roosevelt, and World War I.

Thirty-two page photo album of sixty-eight color photographs depicting a dinner for members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in San Diego, California, on June 18, 2017, and the “Friends and Family Day Cruise” of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on June 19, 2017. The album features many photographs of crew members of the ship, including several of the commanding officer, Craig A. Clapperton, members and officers of the TRA, along with guests and family members. The album also features photographs of the flight deck, bridge, and commanding officer’s quarters on the carrier.
The album opens with a brief biography of the photographer Elise Prudhomme.

Geoffrey Cowan examines the importance of primary elections in a number of twentieth-century presidential campaigns, highlighting the 1912 contest featuring Theodore Roosevelt. Cowan challenges some of the assumptions surrounding Roosevelt’s campaign, asserting that Roosevelt may have been led to run by his jealousy towards Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin and by his need for a fight, and not just his feelings of betrayal towards President William H. Taft. Cowan also demonstrates that Roosevelt was skeptical about embracing the primary system for choosing party nominees until he used the system to his advantage in 1912. Cowan concludes his piece by examining how the primary system affected the 2016 presidential campaign.

Tilchin recounts the difficult years experienced by the TRA between 2005 and 2009, and he praises his predecessor as President, Tweed Roosevelt, for his leadership during and after this period. Tilchin concludes his remarks by noting the various programs that will continue and new initiatives that have been undertaken such as the TRA book prize. A photograph of Tilchin and Roosevelt supplements the text.

Charles O. Bishop charts the coverage of Theodore Roosevelt’s family, his second wife Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt and his six children, in the pages of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal. Bishop provides information on how many articles and photo essays have been published on the family members, and he quotes from the articles. Bishop highlights the work of some Roosevelt family biographers and historians, such as Stacy Cordery and her work on Alice Roosevelt Longworth. Each member of the family, excluding the president, merits a section in the article and only Longworth is not depicted with a photograph.
