Michael Patrick Cullinane argues that the publication of Heather Cole’s Theodore Roosevelt: A Descriptive Bibliography will enhance the understanding and appreciation of Theodore Roosevelt as an author and intellectual which is too often overshadowed by the hunter, soldier, and man of action. Cullinane explores the roots of the bibliography stretching back to the 1920s, and he praises Cole for both her work in compiling the bibliography and for paying attention to its look with the inclusion of color illustrations and manuscript pages. The front and back covers of the bibliography and three examples of its illustrations supplement the review.

Gregory A. Wynn chronicles the search by the Roosevelt Memorial Association (RMA) for a home for its extensive Theodore Roosevelt Collection. Wynn highlights the choice between Columbia and Harvard University, and he highlights the group’s sensitivity to the feelings of Theodore Roosevelt’s widow, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, as well as those of Nora E. Cordingley, the collection’s caretaker at its home at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace. Wynn reveals the disagreements and tensions between members of the RMA and the arguments made for and against each university gaining the collection, and he notes that the New York Public Library was also considered as the repository for the collection.

Three pieces of correspondence from the RMA and a photograph of John A. Gable with Hermann Hagedorn supplement the text.

Forgotten Fragments (#21): Theodore Roosevelt Island

Forgotten Fragments (#21): Theodore Roosevelt Island

Tweed Roosevelt chronicles the history of Theodore Roosevelt Island in the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. Roosevelt traces the history of the island back to Native American inhabitants and notes the island’s swings between use and neglect. Roosevelt also charts efforts to establish a national memorial to Theodore Roosevelt in the nation’s capital and how those efforts finally led to the dedication of a memorial on the island in 1967. Roosevelt concludes the essay by noting how the island has once again fallen victim to neglect, and he proposes that the Theodore Roosevelt Association work with the National Park Service to restore and reinvigorate the island for visitors.

Four photographs and three illustrations supplement the text.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association: An organizational history

The Theodore Roosevelt Association: An organizational history

History of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) that traces the TRA back to the days following the death of Theodore Roosevelt in January 1919. The present day TRA came into being in 1956 following the merger of three Roosevelt memorial organizations. The history notes the TRA’s work in securing historic sites related to the life of Roosevelt, such as his birthplace and home, and the acquisition of additional sites to serve as memorials. It also looks at efforts to preserve historic documents about Roosevelt, and it notes the work of the TRA’s public speaking contests and police awards.

The second page of the article features two photographs from the TRA’s meeting at the White House with President Ronald Reagan on October 27, 1982.

Presidential images, history, and homage: Memorializing Theodore Roosevelt, 1919-1967

Presidential images, history, and homage: Memorializing Theodore Roosevelt, 1919-1967

Alan R. Havig examines the effort of the Roosevelt Memorial Association (RMA) to secure a site on the Washington, D.C., mall to erect a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt. Havig argues that it was not the grandiose design by architect John Russell Pope that doomed the proposal, but that many in and out of Congress felt that constructing a memorial to Roosevelt in the 1920s was too soon after his death. Other critics argued that Roosevelt had not yet earned a place among the memorials to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Havig notes that Roosevelt, while denied a monument in the nation’s capital, would gain a memorial on Theodore Roosevelt Island in 1967, and he would earn a place on South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore among the figures that he was deemed unworthy of joining in the 1920s.

Four illustrations, three photographs of memorials to Roosevelt, and the logo of the Theodore Roosevelt Association populate the essay.

Six women who were president

Six women who were president

Robert D. Dalziel examines the history of the Woman’s Roosevelt Memorial Association (WRMA), noting how the organization struggled in its early years to raise funds to reconstruct Theodore Roosevelt’s boyhood home. Dalziel notes the cooperation between the WRMA and the Roosevelt Memorial Association and how the two organizations would eventually merge in 1956 to form the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). Dalziel highlights the six presidents of the WRMA and says that both organizations had to add “Theodore” to their names to prevent confusion with Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The article includes a photograph of Alice Gilbert Demorest, the first President of the WRMA, and a listing of the members of the executive committee of the TRA.

Book Reviews

Three works come under consideration in the “Book Reviews” section. Cole Patrick looks at both the 1941 and 1989 editions of the Theodore Roosevelt Cyclopedia. He comments on the work of Albert Bushnell Hart in compiling and editing the first edition, and he quotes from William Allen White’s foreword from 1941. Patrick explains the various additions made to the 1989 edition by John A. Gable of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), including a bibliography, a chronology of Theodore Roosevelt’s life, and a history of the TRA.

Tweed Roosevelt examines Bartle Bull’s Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure and highlights its coverage of Theodore Roosevelt’s African safari of 1909-1910, and he also looks at other figures, British and American, who made safaris. He praises the book’s organization and illustrations but faults it for not giving a sense of who the hunters were as people, Roosevelt included. Marilyn E. Weigold praises Elizabeth Winthrop’s novel, In My Mother’s House, for its “precise descriptions of life in Manhattan in the last few decades of the nineteenth century.” The novel’s main character is based on the life of the daughter of Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, Theodore Roosevelt’s sister.

Book Reviews

John A. Gable, editor of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, reviews three works and Richard H. Collin a fourth in the “Book Reviews” section. Gable examines a history of Theodore Roosevelt’s tenure as Police Commissioner of New York City, a biography of Alice Roosevelt Longworth, and a reissue of Hermann Hagedorn’s classic study of Roosevelt’s time in Dakota, Roosevelt in the Bad Lands. Collin studies a work on the relationship between Roosevelt and the naval strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan. Gable lists sixteen changes introduced to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) by Roosevelt, and he finds Jay S. Berman’s study important as the first book solely devoted to Roosevelt’s years with the NYPD despite his misgivings about its use of academic language and police jargon.

Gable focuses on Hagedorn’s research and on his relationship to the Roosevelt Memorial Association rather than on the content of the book, but he quotes David McCullough in arguing that Roosevelt in the Bad Lands remains valuable to those wanting to know about Roosevelt’s time in the West. In reviewing Carol Felsenthal’s Alice Roosevelt Longworth, Gable quotes from newspaper reviews, compares the book to previous biographies, and asserts that it is the best overall study of “Princess Alice” done to date. Collin highlights episodes, mostly negative, from Mahan’s career, and argues that Richard W. Turk’s study of the Roosevelt-Mahan relationship is deeply flawed by its lack of knowledge of Roosevelt, factual errors, and a weak bibliography. A photograph of USS Theodore Roosevelt appears in the Collin review.
