Jack R. Smutz encloses letters regarding a possible visit by Kermit Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt’s grandson, to North Dakota this summer. Nothing is finalized but Smutz suggests the possibility of arranging another symposium featuring Kermit Roosevelt.

Alma Kjelland Kerr has spoken with Kermit Roosevelt and believes that he can be convinced to make a trip to North Dakota. Kerr hopes to accompany him along with a few Middle East ambassadors and their wives, giving them the opportunity to see “our real America.” Kerr suggests a travel program and asks if it is suitable.

Theodore Roosevelt sends Warrington Dawson a copy of his book Fear God and Take Your Own Part. He is sorry that Dawson has been unwell. Belle Roosevelt, Kermit Roosevelt’s wife, has had typhoid. Roosevelt is busy but does not foresee much good coming from it since the country is “sound asleep” like England was two years ago.

Three biographies–of Holt Collier, Theodore Roosevelt, and Gifford Pinchot–come under scrutiny in the “Reviews” section along with a play and documentary about Roosevelt. Tweed Roosevelt finds the biography of Holt Collier, who led Theodore Roosevelt’s famous 1902 bear hunt, notable for its descriptions of slavery in antebellum Mississippi, but he finds its coverage of Roosevelt flawed. Gregory A. Wynn recommends Kathleen Dalton’s biography Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life for its coverage of Roosevelt’s life after the presidency, its recognition of the important influence women had on his life, and for making Roosevelt “a hero for liberals.” The section also contains an excerpt of a review of Dalton’s work from Kirkus Reviews.
Gary A. Clinton admires Laurence Luckinbill’s play Teddy Tonight for capturing the spirit of Roosevelt in his own words, and he finds that it resonates in a nation reeling from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. A review of The History Channel’s documentary TR: An American Lion lists the “talking head” historians who appear in the film along with members of the Roosevelt family. The review highlights the negative coverage given Roosevelt’s attitudes on race and imperialism, and it praises the actors who provide the film’s narration and voice of Roosevelt. The section concludes with excerpts from four positive reviews of Char Miller’s biography of Gifford Pinchot.

This edition of “News and Notes” opens with an obituary for Kermit Roosevelt, grandson of Theodore Roosevelt. The obituary highlights Kermit Roosevelt’s many years of service with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), in particular his role in the overthrow of the government of Iran in 1953. The section includes a two page advertisement from the state of New York promoting visits to the state to commemorate the centennial of Theodore Roosevelt’s governorship of New York. “News and Notes” also highlights efforts by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to promote estate planning by its members; it lists four books recently reviewed in the TRA Journal; and it notes that the TRA recently was awarded two grants to promote conservation and to update a guide to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.

This third installment of “The Roosevelt Family in America: A Genealogy” includes part three of the genealogy as well as an introductory note explaining its publication order and instructions on how to navigate its various parts. An index to all three parts of the genealogy appears at the end of this issue. Part two of the genealogy is labeled as an appendix on “Jacob Rosevelt and His Descendants” and provides a history of the descendants of Jacob Rosevelt, an eighteenth-century German immigrant and includes eighty-one entries, featuring brief biographical portraits of each entrant, along with their birth and death dates, and a listing of their children.

Six works compete for attention in this edition of the “Book Reviews” section, including two works by Theodore Roosevelt: a collection of nine of his speeches and essays published by the Theodore Roosevelt Association and a reissue of his The Naval War of 1812. The review of The Man in the Arena: Speeches and Essays notes that John A. Gable wrote the introduction and explanatory notes, and it provides context for some of the selections. A portion of Gable’s introduction follows the review. Seth Cropsey praises Roosevelt’s naval history and stresses its fairness and “balanced objectivity” and notes its relevance to contemporary debates about how to deploy the American navy.
Lewis L. Gould reviews James Wright’s study of the Progressive era in New Hampshire and notes that Roosevelt’s Bull Moose campaign set back the cause of reform in the state. Archibald B. Roosevelt, Junior, joins his cousin Kermit Roosevelt, Junior, both grandsons of Theodore Roosevelt, in publishing a memoir of his service with the Central Intelligence Agency, For Lust of Knowing: Memoirs of an Intelligence Officer.
The section notes the publication of works on Roosevelt’s time as Police Commissioner of New York City and on his relationship with the naval strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan, and notes that each will be reviewed in an upcoming issue of the Journal.
Report on the 65th Annual Dinner and Meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Williamsburg, Virginia, on October 27, 1984, following the launch of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The report quotes from the address given by the President of the TRA, William Davison Johnston, and from the letter sent to the TRA by President Ronald Reagan. The report lists many of the guests in attendance, including Theodore Roosevelt historians and biographers, employees of the National Park Service, and members of the Roosevelt family. It also reviews the financial state of the TRA, noting that it had run a deficit for the past two fiscal years, covers the election of officers, and notes the changes implemented to the Board of Trustees. The report concludes with a review of gifts given to the leadership of the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

It also notes the establishment of an award named in honor of Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt by the National Recreation and Park Association.

Executive Director John A. Gable gives a comprehensive report on the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) during 1978. He notes an increase in both membership and contributions, and details the day-to-day work of answering phone and letter inquiries about Theodore Roosevelt. In addition to covering aspects of established programs like the student essay and speaking contests and support of research grants made by the American Museum of Natural History, he details the programs surrounding the twenty-fifth anniversary of Sagamore Hill as a public house museum, the TRA’s support of Bulloch Hall, the home of Roosevelt’s mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, in Roswell, Georgia, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project.

Article that announces the annual meeting for 1978 of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection Committee which oversees the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University. The article lists the members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association that serve on the committee, provides an update on the additions and contributions made to the collection, and lists the names of the individuals and organizations that made the donations. The article also says that a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt painted by George Burroughs Torrey at the White House had been donated to Harvard by Dr. Adelbert Ames. The article closes with a history of the Roosevelt Collection from 1919 to 1978.

Review of the one man play “Bully” with Theodore Roosevelt portrayed by James Whitmore. The article quotes reviews from four newspapers including the Boston Globe and Christian Science Monitor. The article and quoted reviews praise the production, and background information is provided about Whitmore as well as the play’s writer, director, and producer. The cooperation and assistance of members of the Roosevelt family and the Theodore Roosevelt Association in the production is also discussed.

Kermit Roosevelt regrets that he and his family cannot visit Robert Harry Munro Ferguson this summer. He provides an update on many Roosevelt family members. Belle Roosevelt is searching for a new home for the family in New York.

Kermit Roosevelt jokes that when the war is over his family will move to Burro Mountain and Kim Roosevelt can teach Spanish to Robert Harry Munro Ferguson. The new arrival is apparently a “bouncer” and has been named Joseph Willard Roosevelt. Roosevelt will be leaving for France soon to join the United States Army. He enjoys the country and will be sorry to leave. Kermit has learned Arabic and is often the only person available to translate.

Kermit Roosevelt and his brothers are undergoing military training in Plattsburg, New York. Archibald B. Roosevelt and Ted Roosevelt have received commissions in the reserve corp and Quentin Roosevelt is doing well at the aviation camp. Richard Derby is a major in the Medical Reserve Corps, but has not gone to the front yet. Kermit hopes to be on the Mesopotamian front as he is familiar with that area. Belle Roosevelt is staying nearby and Kermit visits her when he can. Kim Roosevelt has been ill and may have German measles, which Kermit describes as very unpatriotic. They will join Belle’s family in Spain when Kermit goes to the front.

Kermit Roosevelt describes his current assignment and activities in Iraq. He has joined the Light Armored Motor Battery Service and primarily performs reconnaissance. There are many Scots in his battery. Belle and Kim Roosevelt are doing well. Kermit continues to travel with a book, now rather tattered, that was given to him by Martha Ferguson.

Kermit Roosevelt is in New York with Ethel and Richard Derby. He has plans to stay at Sagamore Hill soon. Roosevelt will be attending one of the camps in Plattsburg, New York, and his family will be going abroad in the fall. Belle Roosevelt is still recovering and their son, Kim, is also having some health issues. The planning for Kim’s christening is underway.
