Wallace Finley Dailey describes the changes and additions to the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University since his last report in 1994. Dailey notes the repair and restoration of thousands of pamphlets, the addition of manuscripts from Roosevelt family members, and the addition of books and articles whose authors made use of the collection in writing their works. Dailey also describes the process of moving the collection’s guides online, and he highlights the various exhibits mounted by Harvard Library using material from the collection. He closes the report by noting that the collection received Theodore Roosevelt’s Pigskin Library, and that it served as the centerpiece of an exhibit.

This edition of “News and Notes” begins with a summary of the events, elections, and speeches at the seventy-first annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) which included the selection of Robert D. Dalziel as the twelfth President of the TRA. The report includes a listing of those elected to the Board of Trustees as well as brief biographies of the past presidents. “News and Notes” also details the conferring of annual awards and prizes supported by the TRA including: natural history research grants from the American Museum of Natural History; the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public schools; the TRA Police Award for the New York City Police Department; and the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize. The section also notes the passing of Archibald B. Roosevelt, Junior, changes in command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and highlights a lecture by David McCullough at the White House on Theodore Roosevelt.

Glover reviews Selwa Roosevelt’s chronicle of her seven year stint as Chief of Protocol for the United States during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. New books given brief notices include a study of President Theodore Roosevelt’s diplomacy in the Caribbean basin and an examination of Roosevelt as a speaker. The section also notes the publication of a paperback version of Sylvia Jukes Morris’s biography of Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt and a paperback of Theodore Roosevelt’s Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter. The section praises James F. Vivian’s collection of Theodore Roosevelt’s speeches in North Dakota and closes with a review of William Davison Johnston’s history of the Oyster Bay, New York, Presbyterian Church.

The first three topics involve awards and prizes conferred in 1988, and describe the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York public schools, research grants from the American Museum of Natural History, and the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize. The column reprints Tweed Roosevelt’s address on the 100 year anniversary of Arbor Day in Albany, New York, and notes the passing of Paul Russell Cutright who wrote two books about Roosevelt as a naturalist. “News and Notes” also highlights the speaking engagements of John A. Gable, promotes the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s publication of a collection of Roosevelt’s speeches, The Man in the Arena, and refutes assertions made in the media that Roosevelt believed in astrology.

Six works compete for attention in this edition of the “Book Reviews” section, including two works by Theodore Roosevelt: a collection of nine of his speeches and essays published by the Theodore Roosevelt Association and a reissue of his The Naval War of 1812. The review of The Man in the Arena: Speeches and Essays notes that John A. Gable wrote the introduction and explanatory notes, and it provides context for some of the selections. A portion of Gable’s introduction follows the review. Seth Cropsey praises Roosevelt’s naval history and stresses its fairness and “balanced objectivity” and notes its relevance to contemporary debates about how to deploy the American navy.
Lewis L. Gould reviews James Wright’s study of the Progressive era in New Hampshire and notes that Roosevelt’s Bull Moose campaign set back the cause of reform in the state. Archibald B. Roosevelt, Junior, joins his cousin Kermit Roosevelt, Junior, both grandsons of Theodore Roosevelt, in publishing a memoir of his service with the Central Intelligence Agency, For Lust of Knowing: Memoirs of an Intelligence Officer.
The section notes the publication of works on Roosevelt’s time as Police Commissioner of New York City and on his relationship with the naval strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan, and notes that each will be reviewed in an upcoming issue of the Journal.

Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger addresses the crowd assembled for the commissioning of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on October 25, 1986. Weinberger traces Theodore Roosevelt’s interest in the United States Navy from his writing of the Naval History of the War of 1812 to his sending of the Great White Fleet while President. Weinberger also discusses the maritime strategy of the administration of President Ronald Reagan and argues that its policy mirrors that of Roosevelt’s with its emphasis on a powerful Navy and negotiating from a position of strength. Weinberger uses Roosevelt’s phrase “the just man armed” to describe the purpose of the Theodore Roosevelt.

Report on the ceremonies and events surrounding the commissioning of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt from October 24 to October 28, 1986 in Newport News, Virginia. The report covers the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in raising funds and supplies for the ship’s crew and lists many of the members of the TRA who facilitated the work. The report also discusses the annual dinner of the TRA held on board the ship, the commissioning of the carrier, the ecumenical religious services held on board the ship, and the two balls held for the ship’s crew. The report names the descendants of Theodore Roosevelt who attended the commissioning, highlights the organization of a ship’s museum dedicated to Roosevelt, and covers the history of other U.S. Navy ships named Theodore Roosevelt.

Obituary of Archibald B. Roosevelt, son of Theodore Roosevelt, written by his cousin P. James Roosevelt. He discusses Archibald’s childhood antics in the White House with his brother Quentin and his education at various schools. He details his service in both world wars and how he earned his military decorations, and he examines Archibald’s career in finance in New York and Florida and discusses his charitable and volunteer work, especially in conservation, most notably with the Boone & Crockett Club. The obituary includes a poem written by Archibald, “Canada Geese.”
Four photographs of Archibald Roosevelt accompany the obituary: one shows him as a young man; another shows him and his brother Quentin training for service in World War I; another shows him and his wife Grace Stackpole Lockwood Roosevelt on horseback; and the last one shows him holding one of his father’s hunting rifles.

The picture of Archibald Roosevelt made Theodore Roosevelt homesick for his grandson. It is still unclear if Archie Roosevelt will be returning from Europe. Quentin Roosevelt was credited with an aerial victory and Flora Whitney visited to discuss his success.

Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt were able to see Archie’s wife Grace Stackpole Lockwood Roosevelt and their son Archibald Roosevelt. He thinks that Archibald looks like his father. Grace is the “dearest girl imaginable” and the Lockwoods were very understanding about Grace and Archibald visiting Sagamore Hill in May. Josh Hartwell provided more detailed information about Archie’s injury, including that he had to remain in the trenches for fourteen hours after being wounded.

Theodore Roosevelt sends news from home to an injured Archibald Roosevelt. The family is very proud of Archie, and Roosevelt is enjoying spending time with his grandchildren. The German offensive has made it clear to the public that American forces are “helpless to give substantial aid” to their allies. American forces do not have sufficient equipment and supplies, or any immediate prospect of being properly supplied.
