Includes entry regarding the deaths of his wife and mother on February 14, with the statement, “The light has gone out of my life.” Also, the diary describes Roosevelt’s hunting and ranching experiences for the year in the Dakota Badlands. Roosevelt describes many of the places they have been to visit and gives descriptions of what he saw, including Bray, the Wicklow Mountains and Powenscourt Manor. He informs his sister they will be traveling to Liverpool next.

He also tells her that he has been practicing his Italian and seems not to be having too much trouble communicating. They head to Como next.

He describes their first “alpine travel” and says they enjoyed Switzerland the most so far. He reminisces about traveling with Anna in Switzerland in their youth.

He also writes about the recent engagement of his brother, Elliott Roosevelt.
