Theodore Roosevelt tells James Ford Rhodes how much he enjoyed visiting him and his wife, Ann Charlotte Card Rhodes. Roosevelt looks forward to visiting again next year when he is President of the American Historical Association.

President Roosevelt’s former classmate, James Ford Rhodes, reflects on Roosevelt’s administration and how it will be viewed by history. He believes three points will endure: the man whose critics called him a champion of war has become a peace keeper; Roosevelt has set a high standard of honesty in public service, and has inspired good young men to enter into politics; and his presidency has favored neither the rich nor the poor, but administered justice to both. Rhodes also reflects on the lives of the rich, comparing America’s wealthy with others in history, particularly those of the Roman Republic and Empire. He believes the Americans are better because of the use they make of their wealth. While the ancient Romans dedicated themselves to lives of sensual pleasure, the modern Americans live simply and give to educational and charitable causes.

Theodore Roosevelt informs James Ford Rhodes that he is unable to come to Boston due to the calls from the Progressive leaders there. Roosevelt will stay with William Sturgis Bigelow, but is happy to have dinner with Rhodes.

President Roosevelt invites James Ford Rhodes and his wife to lunch on December 29 at 1:30. He will invite British Ambassador James Bryce, Secretary of State Elihu Root, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, and Supreme Court Justices William H. Moody and Oliver Wendell Holmes.

President Roosevelt is pleased that James Ford Rhodes is able to take a break from his work and is planning to take a vacation to Europe. He hopes Rhodes and his wife will be able to visit the White House when they return. Roosevelt offers to write letters of introduction for Rhodes if there are any people in Europe he particularly would like to meet.
