The Louisiana Republican State Central Committee called for a convention to nominate a state ticket but will select delegates to the Republican National Convention at a later date. The committee’s plan appears to be to capture Democratic votes with a “white basis” state convention and then only later offer African American representation to the national convention.

Augustus Everett Willson states that the plan failed because “we could not agree on Mr. Yerkes” as chairman of the convention. John Watson Yerkes wished to exclude Governor William O’Connell Bradley from the delegation to the Republican National Convention. Willson encloses a memorandum regarding his letter of February 1 to Richard Wilson Knott. Willson is willing to meet with Yerkes and President Roosevelt.

Whitelaw Reid believes that since Joseph Bucklin Bishop and his newspaper can be so helpful during President Roosevelt’s campaign, it is not wise to encourage him to leave his position. Reid notes that there has been a change in political opinion lately, though a few remain discontented about the “coal strike, the Northern Securities, and certain trivialities like negro appointments, etc.”
