Letter from J. S. Sherman to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from J. S. Sherman to Theodore Roosevelt

Representative Sherman notifies President Roosevelt that a meeting with Speaker of the House Joseph Gurney Cannon will be held, but a meeting with Secretary of State Elihu Root will be abandoned. The justification for the decision was “the howl the ‘Yellow Journals’ would make” about Root’s acceptance of a retainer for being counsel to Thomas F. Ryan. Representative Jacob Van Vechten Olcott feels that Cannon’s speech at Durlan’s Academy can only bring “great good.” Sherman feels the Republicans will not lose any votes by exploiting the achievements of the party, and he acquiesces to Representative Herbert Parsons in terms of who would be best to speak in New York City. Sherman hopes Root might schedule a speech in upstate New York.

Letter from J. S. Sherman to Theodore Roosevelt

Representative Sherman writes to President Roosevelt that the Republican Congressional Committee has not emphasized the expression “stand-pat,” and they have decided not to attempt any tariff revision at this time. The phrase was used by newspapers. Sherman also thinks that the letter that Roosevelt will send to Republican Whip James E. Watson is splendid.

The agony of the assessed – between two terrors

“G. W. Curtis” and “Jay Hubbell” appear as executioners, each wearing a mask and holding large axes labeled “Civil Service Reform Association” (Curtis) and “Republican Congressional Committee” (Hubbell). Curtis instructs the “Office Holder” seated between them to “Don’t Pay! or be Discharged” and Hubbell instructs the bewildered man to “Pay! or be Discharged.”
