Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Felix Frankfurter

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Felix Frankfurter

Theodore Roosevelt is grateful for Agnes Repplier’s writings on the pacifists and on national duty. Roosevelt believes that Americans’ main national duty is to make sure that those of foreign birth or parentage are “Americans and nothing else.” It would be best if someone of foreign birth or parentage led the effort. President Wilson has failed to lead the nation and its “unpreparedness is moral and spiritual.”

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to James Brown Scott

Theodore Roosevelt corresponds with James Brown Scott on the issue of American defense, approving his changing views on the necessity of defending the Panama Canal and bemoaning America’s lack of response to German aggression. Roosevelt notes how his own views on universal military service have changed. Additionally, he mentions an article Edith Roosevelt had read to him, written by the popular conservative essayist Agnes Repplier, another advocate of military preparedness.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Fraser Metzger

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Fraser Metzger

Theodore Roosevelt does not think of Fraser Metzger as a German American any more than he thinks of himself as a Dutch American. He believes that, as a whole, German immigrants were better but compares Germany under Prussian militarism to the Southern slave-holding regime before the Civil War. Roosevelt enjoyed Agnes Repplier’s article and plans to send Metzger’s letter to her.

Roosevelt encloses a letter he received from Rev. Frasier Metzger, son of German immigrants, also expressing appreciation for the article. Roosevelt wishes White to share this letter with Repplier.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to J. William White

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to J. William White

Theodore Roosevelt tells Dr. White that he has written to Raymond Robins that he cannot speak at the contemporary club about the war. If he starts, he will never stop and writing is a better way to reach his audience. Roosevelt is very interested to read the article White wrote with Agnes Repplier, with whom he had at first disagreed for being a pacifist but who he now supports.
