Bishop McFaul would like Eugene A. Philbin to assure President Roosevelt of the good will of the American Federation of Catholic Societies. McFaul favors a public school system in the Philippines but wanted it to be adapted to the Catholic majority with religion as part of the curriculum. He also believes that the friar question would have resolved itself without government intervention.

Theodore Lange opposes the appointment of B. Storer as ambassador to Germany. Storer is Catholic and Lange believes that his religious affiliation “would provoke a storm of indignation” amongst German and Scandinavian Lutherans. Lange prefers the appointment of David Jayne Hill.

T. B. Connery suggests that if President Roosevelt let the Papal Delegate know he desired Bishop Spalding’s appointment as archbishop it would be granted.

The priest requests that the prohibition against ringing church bells early in the morning be lifted, to allow his parishioners to celebrate Christmas as they have been accustomed to do. President Roosevelt was omitted from the guest list for the celebration of Pope Leo XIII’s elevation to the pontificate and the beginning of his Silver Jubilee year. Crimmins believes that Roosevelt’s omission was accidental and notifies Roosevelt that since the Silver Jubilee extends until March 3 congratulatory letters can still be sent. He also suggests that Bishop McDonnell could convey a message as he will soon be traveling to Rome.

Before disposing of the “McSweeney matter,” Eugene A. Philbin wants President Roosevelt to know that McSweeney’s official conduct has the approval of the Protestant societies. He adds that he has something interesting to tell Roosevelt concerning the Catholic side of “the Philippine matter.”

Maria Longworth Storer apologizes for the harm she may have caused by informing Cardinal Rampolla of President Roosevelt and William H. Taft’s opinions concerning the Catholic Church and church policy in the United States. Roosevelt had previously expressed concern about a reactionary Church policy that could prove disastrous for Catholic interests and American policy. Storer supports a liberal church policy that she believes will create “honest citizens and loyal patriots.” She does not understand how her actions have harmed Roosevelt.

Archbishop Ireland clarifies his suggestion that John Watson Foster be sent as an envoy to the Vatican. Governor Taft would be the ideal candidate as he is the most knowledgeable regarding Filipino matters. However, the urgency of the situation and Taft’s many responsibilities may require an alternative selection.

William Hayes Ward interviewed Archbishop Ireland and discussed Philippine matters. He sympathizes with Ireland’s views and aims. Ward supports an arrangement that will allow the United States to purchase the land held by the friars, including negotiations with the Vatican.

Acting Governor General of the Philippines Wright has received the complaints about the friars inhabiting the Pueblo of Jimenez. The friars are not breaking any law and have the right to live wherever they like. It is unfortunate that they insist on remaining in a community that does not desire their presence or services. Inhabitants do not need to visit the friars’ church or contribute to their maintenance.
