Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Riley Champlin

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Riley Champlin

President Roosevelt entirely believes Governor Charles Evans Hughes should be renominated and has given his opinion to various party leaders. He cannot dictate the nomination, but notes that he has done more to secure Hughes’ nomination than he did to bring about William H. Taft’s nomination as Republican presidential candidate. While there are reasons to oppose Hughes, the reasons for renominating him counterbalance them.

Letter from William Allen White to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from William Allen White to Theodore Roosevelt

William Allen White, editor of the Emporia Gazette, expresses his hurt at President Roosevelt criticizing him to Kansas Representatives Philip Pitt Campbell and Charles F. Scott for supporting Senator Robert M. La Follette. Roosevelt’s criticism was based on White’s having invited La Follette to Kansas to fight the railroad interests and the senatorial candidacy of Charles Curtis. White likens the situation to that of Roosevelt working with Tammany Hall operative Patrick Divver and with Pennsylvania Senator Matthew Stanley Quay. In each case, White notes, Roosevelt was working to achieve a good end, while differing greatly with the other person on politics. White asks Roosevelt to withhold judging him for working with La Follette and to not become directly involved with the political fight in Kansas.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Joseph Gurney Cannon

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Joseph Gurney Cannon

President Roosevelt encloses in a letter to Speaker Cannon a letter he wrote to a Quaker to clarify his attitude towards Quakers. Roosevelt elaborates that the doors of the White House will “swing open as easily to wageworkers as to capitalists” and that he strives to represent all citizens.

Letter from Thomas J. Dolan to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Thomas J. Dolan to Theodore Roosevelt

Returning from a recent trip, Thomas J. Dolan informs President Roosevelt that while he heard “a certain class of people” criticize Roosevelt, the average citizen still fully supports him. Despite an increase in business, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad company laid off 300 travel agents within the last three days, as have other companies. Dolan believes the reason is to cause public discontent with Roosevelt’s administration. As he considers Roosevelt a friend, Dolan does not want to see him blamed for matters he does not control.
