Theodore Roosevelt declines the request of Elizabeth Waters Quay’s friend to write a poem. He expresses concern for Quay’s husband, Richard, who is not well, but is glad to hear about Quay’s children. Roosevelt invites the family to his home if they are ever in New York. Roosevelt also tells Quay that he would be glad to autograph a photograph if she sends one.

Theodore Roosevelt is annoyed that Philander C. Knox was given the trouble of coming to the office because of Richard R. Quay’s telegram. Roosevelt cannot imagine how Quay could have misunderstood him, as Roosevelt told Quay that he planned to motor out to Oyster Bay. Roosevelt invites Knox and his wife to lunch with himself and Mrs. Roosevelt when they are in New York.

President Roosevelt encloses for Secretary of the Treasury Cortelyou a letter from Richard R. Quay, as well as his response to Quay. Roosevelt believes that Senator Philander C. Knox was wrong on the matter, and Quay was right. However, they cannot afford to allow “even the suspicion” of political influence to emerge in management of the matter.
