Comments and Context

It is a testament to the popularity of Theodore Roosevelt, and his wife Edith, that even after 15 months in office, a Democratic journal like Puck Magazine would portray the Republican president in such a flattering manner and offer him New Year’s wishes totally apart from politics or an partisan issues. Joseph Keppler Junior, despite owning the magazine, was the most admiring of Roosevelt among editors and cartoonists through the years. He particularly was in agreement with most of Roosevelt’s views on the West, Indian policies, and conservation.
