Theodore Roosevelt at the Library of Congress

Michelle A. Krowl of the Library of Congress presents twenty items from the library’s Theodore Roosevelt Collection. The material, consisting of twelve letters, four other documents, three political cartoons, and a campaign poster, encompass the years 1884 to 1934. Twelve of the documents were penned by Roosevelt, and Krowl provides context and background for each item while including quotes from the document in her description. The twenty items are preceded by a short introductory essay by Krowl which includes two photographs of the Library of Congress.

The president’s family

McClure’s is making available an article on “The President’s Family” which appeared in the July issue of their magazine. There has been such demand for the reprint that they are charging 25 cents a copy. They relate a humorous story about an ex-governor of a western state who had so many friends visiting him that he had to begin charging them to stay, to illustrate the need for the charge.

Letter from Douglas Robinson to Theodore Roosevelt

Douglas Robinson has received the check and will invest it on President Roosevelt’s behalf. Robinson has also received a check from the law firm of Carter and Ledyard. This is an inheritance payment. Robinson will send a ring Ethel Carow Roosevelt wants as soon as it is retrieved from the vault. He and Corinne Roosevelt Robinson enjoyed their trip with Roosevelt to St. Louis, Missouri.

Assistant Secretary of State Loomis has received Secretary Loeb’s letter regarding malicious articles concerning the Roosevelt family which appeared in the Boston Herald. Loomis has provided executives in the State Department with copies of the White House press release on the matter.

President Roosevelt writes to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt to discuss a book of Augustine Birrell’s essays, which she sent him while she was away visiting their son, Kermit Roosevelt, at school. Roosevelt gives his wife updates on the other children and says he has continued to read A Legend of Montrose with them in her absence.

President Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit to tell him about his trip to the Jamestown Exposition on Georgia Day, where they built a reproduction of Roosevelt’s grandfather’s house as the Georgia State Building. He also congratulates Kermit on the performance of his crew team at Groton School.

Theodore Roosevelt is sorry that Meyer Lissner and California Governor Hiram Johnson are disappointed with him but Roosevelt did not want to interfere by offering advice. Roosevelt discusses his grandchildren and a blanket that Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt is knitting for the Governor’s grandchild. Roosevelt asks if Lissner and his wife Ermine Greenhood Lissner might visit this winter.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Anna Roosevelt Cowles

President Roosevelt writes to Anna Roosevelt Cowles to thank her for the lamp, and wishes her son, William Sheffield Cowles, could have been at the White House for Christmas. It was Christmas in “the usual style,” and then a three hour ride with the chattering children and Fitzhugh Lee, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, and Secretary of State Elihu Root. They had lunch with the Lodge and Cooley families and then Roosevelt played tennis with Ambassador J. J. Jusserand, Ted Roosevelt and Kermit Roosevelt.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to William Emlen Roosevelt

President Roosevelt updates his cousin William Emlen Roosevelt on Archibald B. Roosevelt’s health. He expresses his concern about the situation going on in the business world. He notes that Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt and Archibald will not be going on the trip down south. He asks William to give him notice when William decides to visit. He expresses relief that William warned Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. about business. He is disappointed that he did not see William’s son, George Emlen Roosevelt, at Harvard, but notes that he did not see much of his son, Theodore, either.
