The material culture of Theodore Roosevelt (#6): Collecting TR

The material culture of Theodore Roosevelt (#6): Collecting TR

Gregory A. Wynn chronicles his nearly thirty year friendship with fellow Theodore Roosevelt collector Peter Scanlan. Wynn charts the relationship from its beginning in 1984 to Scanlan’s death in 2012, and he focuses on their shared enthusiasm for collecting items, especially books, related to Roosevelt’s life. Wynn notes their travels together to bookshops, antique shows, and auctions in search of more goods for their collections. Wynn notes that he and Scanlan helped grow each other’s collections, and he asserts that Scanlan’s Roosevelt collection may have been the preeminent private collection in the United States.

Five photographs, including two of Wynn and Scanlan together, accompany the text along with an image of a poster that both men competed for at an auction.

TRA announcments

Gregory A. Wynn announces that he will be writing a new semi-regular column for the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal about the material culture of Theodore Roosevelt. Wynn, a collector of “Rooseveltiana,” will examine an object connected to Roosevelt in the hopes of further illuminating some aspect of Roosevelt’s life and times. The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) also extends its thanks to Howard Ehrlich for serving as the interim executive director while the leadership of the TRA was in transition. The section includes a text box listing the President and Executive Director of the TRA, along with those responsible for assembling its journal, and guidelines for submitting manuscripts.

News and Notes…..

News and Notes…..

Much of this edition of the “News and Notes” column is dedicated to a report on the annual meeting and dinner of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Dallas, Texas, in October 1988. The report notes the meeting of the Board of Trustees, highlights the annual election of the leadership of the TRA, and discusses the various talks and reports presented at the meeting. The column details the opening of a special exhibit at the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University, “The Incredible Teddy Roosevelt,” that comes from the Theodore Roosevelt collection of Lawrence H. Budner and Doris Albert Budner of Dallas, and it quotes from various Dallas newspaper editorials on Theodore Roosevelt.

The column also announces that the 1989 TRA Annual Meeting will be held at the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands and notes the publication of a previously unpublished article by Roosevelt, “Sou’-Sou’ Southerly,” in Gray’s Sporting Journal. The column includes Roosevelt related news from Buffalo, New York, Bethlehem, New Hampshire, and from the USS Theodore Roosevelt. “News and Notes” concludes with John A. Gable’s speaking engagements and reminders about Roosevelt related publications available from Meckler Publishing, including a reissue of the Theodore Roosevelt Cyclopedia.

The column features seven photographs of guests at the TRA annual dinner, a portrait painting of Roosevelt, and a photograph of the Budners in their Dallas home. An illustration of both sides of the TRA medallion appears on the last page of the column.
