Prendergast must remorsefully turn down Theodore Roosevelt’s invitation to visit Sagamore Hill, as the scheduled date “is Board of Estimate Day” and his wife, Agnes Hull Prendergast, is attending a luncheon. He asks for forgiveness, as he worries his rejection “really forcloses us from ever again being in Colonel Roosevelt’s good wishes.”
