Theodore Roosevelt advises Gardiner Howland Shaw regarding his future plans, as he will graduate from Harvard in just a few months. (Shaw’s father, Henry Russell Shaw, was a Harvard classmate of Roosevelt’s, and died in 1904.) Roosevelt advises against studying law for a year if Shaw does not intend to be a lawyer. He recommends that Shaw meet with Arthur Dehon Hill, who was district attorney in Boston. If Shaw is ultimately interested in politics, Roosevelt suggests an apprenticeship at a newspaper. Shaw should not look for a diplomatic position until he acquires some experience in local politics.

George E. Vincent is visiting with Jacob A. Riis, who hopes Theodore Roosevelt will be at Chautauqua, New York, in the summer. Vincent can arrange a meeting with Roscoe Pound if Roosevelt is attending.

Charles C. Goetsch examines the legal, philosophical, and political dispute between Theodore Roosevelt and Simeon E. Baldwin, a Yale Law School professor, Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors, and Governor of Connecticut. He details the conservative legal outlook of Baldwin and how this view clashed with the progressive political beliefs of Roosevelt. Goetsch shows how a legal dispute over the constitutionality of the Federal Employers Liability Act extended from the courts to the 1910 election campaign where Roosevelt’s rhetoric prompted Baldwin to consider a libel suit against the former president.
