President Roosevelt is sorry he missed Mexican Vice President Ramón Corral Verdugo’s telegram from October 11 about his upcoming visit to the United States. Roosevelt has directed those in St. Louis, San Francisco, and elsewhere to extend every courtesy to Corral and his party. Corral’s visit is “another proof of the good will that happily exists between our two countries.”

Senator Bristow would be appreciative if Theodore Roosevelt could speak at the Lincoln Park Chautauqua in Cawker City, Kansas. The distances involved might make the trip inconvenient and Bristow defers judgment on the desirability of the trip to William Allen White.

Senator Cummins writes to inform Theodore Roosevelt that he is unable to travel to New York as work continues on the Panama Canal bill and the Post Office Appropriation bill.

William H. Taft encloses a letter that is being sent out widely by General Solicitor of the Burlington Railroad James Blythe. Taft discusses the stops on his trip and writes that, based on the reception thus far, he feels the campaign will be a success even if there are still worries about the labor vote. Support for William Jennings Bryan appears to be waning after President Roosevelt’s swift attack. Taft has written to Treasurer of the Republican National Committee George Rumsey Sheldon about avoiding contributions from trust affiliates and instead soliciting businessmen across the country. The election is four weeks away, and Taft is anxious for the speeches and events that precede it.

Secretary of the Treasury Shaw will try to support the Republican campaign in Colorado and Texas as President Roosevelt requests, but Representative J. S. Sherman, chair of the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee, has made appointments which may interfere with Shaw’s being able to go. Regarding the appointment of a new diamond appraiser at the Port of New York, Shaw recommends that Roosevelt use an Executive Order to make an appointment, as the Civil Service examination will not produce a suitable candidate. Shaw had a successful campaign trip to North Carolina.

Secretary of State Root informs President Roosevelt that he will be returning Nicholas Murray Butler’s letter about the trip to Brazil. He also states he is anxious to have it understood that he is just going to Brazil, not for an expedition or a party.

Vice President Roosevelt writes to Charles Benedict Davenport about the upcoming visit of famed marine biologist Alexander Agassiz. Roosevelt thought that Davenport had stated Agassiz was visiting in August, not July when Roosevelt will be away, and is sorry to miss him.

President Roosevelt hopes that Senator George Frisbie Hoar will be reasonable, but he will submit Oliver Wendell Holmes’s nomination to the United States Supreme Court regardless. Roosevelt is speaking in Providence, Rhode Island, on August 23, and then will go down to Newport, Rhode Island, so they can christen the baby (Lodge’s infant grandson who shared his name). He will also spend Monday with the Lodges in Nahant, Massachusetts, but Edith Roosevelt will not be able to attend.

President Roosevelt has decided to appoint W. Cameron Forbes to the Philippine Commission. Roosevelt will gladly stay with Senator Lodge in Nahant, Massachusetts, on Monday. Roosevelt has also recently concluded a somewhat trying camping trip with his children that included 16 miles of rowing. Roosevelt received a nice letter from Senator George Frisbie Hoar, and shall announce Oliver Wendell Holmes’s appointment to the United States Supreme Court today.
