Telegram from Augustus Peabody Gardner to Theodore Roosevelt

Telegram from Augustus Peabody Gardner to Theodore Roosevelt

Representative Gardner does not have the time to speak to Massachusetts Senators Winthrop Murray Crane or Henry Cabot Lodge due to his traveling and speaking schedule in the last days before the election. Gardner will follow Roosevelt’s judgement and not publish the letter, but he regrets the effects of the case on his reputation. Gardner is sure that Charles M. Hoyt will work for the Republican ticket regardless, and that the only candidacy that will be affected is his own.

The progress of the world

The progress of the world

An article in The American Review of Reviews reflects on the current political situation in Congress, especially lamenting that both houses are controlled by powerful cliques who work in their own interests, often at the expense of legislation that would benefit the people. In particular, tariffs and appropriations for the construction of battleships are discussed. The author also speculates about the outcomes of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions and the upcoming presidential campaign, as well as the necessity of a good man to run the Republican convention.

A foregone conclusion

A foregone conclusion

The outcome of the New York Republican state convention, committing the state’s delegates to support Theodore Roosevelt as the party’s nominee for the presidency at the upcoming national convention, is not surprising. It confirms the party’s stated intention of two years ago. In conjunction with several other states having declared their support, Roosevelt is now the presumptive Republican candidate. What is unusual, however, is that Roosevelt is the first vice president, having succeeded to the presidency through the death of a president, to receive such unanimous support for re-election. Part of the reason for this is that Roosevelt had already been a strong candidate when he was chosen to run as vice president. Another unusual characteristic of the upcoming convention is that it is not “packed” for Roosevelt, but that his candidacy truly reflects the will of the people.

Letter from John Campbell Greenway to Leonard Wood

Letter from John Campbell Greenway to Leonard Wood

John Campbell Greenway regards Senator Warren G. Harding, the Republican presidential candidate, as the candidate of a “little group,” and Greenway will not support the Republican ticket. Harding is offensive to progressives and will be controlled from behind the scenes. Greenway and the Arizona delegation did their best to support General Wood at the convention. He expects that Harding will be elected as a result of resentment against the Wilson administration. Greenway believes Governor Cox, the Democratic candidate, is a “man of decisive character” and a better candidate.

Letter from John Campbell Greenway to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from John Campbell Greenway to Theodore Roosevelt

John Campbell Greenway advises Theodore Roosevelt on how he ought to proceed in regard to his possible candidacy for president. If Roosevelt is to run again “it must be at the earnest entreaty of the people as a whole.” Greenway suggests that Roosevelt could be the Progressive and Republican nominee with adroit political maneuvering. He does not think that Roosevelt should accept a nomination from only a single party.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Robert Harry Munro Ferguson

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Robert Harry Munro Ferguson

After receiving Robert Harry Munro Ferguson’s letter, Theodore Roosevelt wrote to David Goodrich and strongly stated the case. He also wrote to Major Llewellyn about corruption in the election of United States senators. The political situation is “very much mixed” and Roosevelt believes it would be a calamity if he was nominated as a presidential candidate. He does not believe he will be nominated but if there is a “genuine popular movement” he will not be able to decline.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to T. Herbert Warren

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to T. Herbert Warren

While president, Theodore Roosevelt advocated for the “Swiss system of universal service” but was mostly ignored. He has been attempting to teach Americans the lessons of the war and now has a considerable following. Roosevelt reminisces about John Hay and fondly recalls a gift Hay gave to him, a ring with a strand of Abraham Lincoln’s hair. He also appreciated a gift he received from King Edward VII, a miniature of John Hampden. The gift displayed King Edward’s refinement and nicely contrasted with the gift from Emperor William II, a massive bronze bust of himself that ended up in the basement of an art gallery.
