In contrast, Burton cannot be trusted and will desert the President “whenever there is a dollar in sight.”

Wayne MacVeagh sends Vice President Roosevelt a clipping from the Philadelphia Ledger, a Republican paper that has always supported him. MacVeagh writes that the treaty with the British will suit Roosevelt’s views if Roosevelt speaks with them courteously but firmly. If Roosevelt decides that the current treaty should simply repeal the previous Clatyon-Bulwer treaty, that is all it will do. Finally, MacVeagh reminds Roosevelt that “the plain people” from the West have always supported him and will continue to do so if he remains true to himself.

George P. Waldorf encloses resolutions passed by the Lucas County Republican Central Committee and reviews the local opinion on Senator Hanna. He hopes that President Roosevelt can develop a personal relationship with Hanna. This could prevent factional differences within Ohio.

Lyman Abbott thanks Vice President Roosevelt for a speech which will be published with President McKinley’s Pan-American speech. He thinks that these two speeches printed together will show the country that, if necessary, the policies of the McKinley administration will be maintained under Roosevelt. Abbott’s confidence in Roosevelt makes him less apprehensive of the future.

E. Mont Reily’s Roosevelt Club No. 1 has over two thousand members. Everyone was shocked by the attempted assassination of President McKinley but Roosevelt’s bearing during the crisis has increased his political support.

E. Mont Reily advises Vice President Roosevelt to ignore the Scott matter. Efforts are underway to prevent Mr. Scott’s reappointment. The newspaper in Independence, Missouri, has declared its support for Roosevelt and Reily will soon be setting up a club in Independence.

Claris Yeuell is the editor of a Republican newspaper in Alabama and a supporter of Vice President Roosevelt. He believes that efforts are being made to raise public sentiment against Roosevelt in the South in light of Roosevelt’s upcoming trip to the region. The scheduled visit with Booker T. Washington is receiving a great deal of attention. Yeuell requests an interview with Roosevelt and is willing to publish anything to help Roosevelt’s candidacy.

He argues that Roosevelt will need the support of Senators Hanna, Platt, and Quay and can acquire their support without resorting to dirty politics. White also believes that there is a suitable place for money in political campaigns.
