Senator John H. Mitchell insists that William McKinley had promised his son an appointment as captain in the Quartermaster’s Department but there is no record of such a promise. President Roosevelt would like young Mitchell to be made a first lieutenant if he does well on the examination.

William W. Keen writes to Lyman Abbott about John Edward Addicks, an aspiring politician in Delaware. Keen has corresponded with Abbott previously on this topic. He has also contacted Secretary of State John Hay, whom he first met in college. Keen states that Addicks is “in financial straits” and his home is falling into disrepair. Keen also claims that Addicks has “captured the entire fortune of both of [his] wives,” the first of whom is deceased, the second from whom he is divorced.

Theodore Roosevelt responds to Colonel Alexander Brodie, inviting Brodie and his wife for a visit. Roosevelt also clarifies great-grandfather relations that Brodie had previously mentioned.

Theodore Roosevelt is happy that the safari has been a success, although he is homesick and will not listen to those who tell him he should wait to travel home until after the fall elections. Roosevelt is eager to see his articles published in book form, and hopes that it will be received as well as the recent publications were.

Governor Roosevelt responds to General Johnson’s April 23, 1899, letter and news that Johnson has been seriously ill. Along with sending him well wishes on behalf of himself and the Roosevelt family, Roosevelt assures Johnson that he will forward him a copy of his Chicago speech as soon as he can.

John Barrett provides information on Senator Mitchell who will be meeting with President Roosevelt on September 30. Mitchell is a powerful senator and wants his son, Captain H. E. Mitchell, appointed as captain of quartermasters or paymasters in the regular army. Barrett recommends Captain Mitchell be given the appointment as his father’s cooperation will be useful to the Roosevelt administration.
