President Roosevelt thanks Reverend Abbott for writing to him. He feels the death of former Secretary of State John Hay “bitterly” for both personal and public reasons, but what he must now “make good” is the public loss. He will not stop Secretary of War William H. Taft from going to the Philippines, but is having difficulty managing the State Department by himself. He wishes he could find help for the peace negotiations between Japan and Russia, as well as for San Domingo and Venezuela. If William J. Calhoun is willing to go to Venezuela, Roosevelt will send him.

President Roosevelt agrees with Elihu Root’s comments regarding corruption in New York and he is pleased that the speech will be published. The Republican Party and the country benefited from the work of Senator Hanna and his death is “very sad.” The Panama treaty appears set to pass and the cooperation with Germany on securing the neutrality of China was a success.

Senator Lodge reports that Senator Hoar’s death is imminent. Since Lodge must remain with Hoar he asks if he can postpone his trip for one week.

Seth Low tells President Roosevelt of a conversation he had with Archbishop Farley who spoke warmly of Roosevelt and “hopes sincerely” he will be re-elected. Low notes that he has followed the course of events in the Far East and is delighted that Secretary Hay’s note on China’s instability is being met with agreement. He wishes Roosevelt well on Panama and shares sympathy on the death of Senator Hanna. Low shares an anecdote about a donkey that he and Mrs. Low encountered while traveling and hopes his note gave Roosevelt a “moment’s relief from the cares of State.”
