Odell machine is a-moving

New York Governor Benjamin B. Odell has revived speculation that he will remove George Hilliard from his position as special deputy commissioner for the New York City Department of Excise. Hilliard supports Senator Thomas Collier Platt. The newspaper reports that the rise of a Republican party insurgency is possible, and that if Platt loses a supporter, President Roosevelt will not have a solid delegation in the state.

That contempt of court

That contempt of court

The editorial writers of the Alburquerque Morning Journal claim the paper would be in contempt of court if the writers were to discuss the report of referee Charles V. Safford in the case of Prison Superintendent Holm Olaf Bursum. The Alburquerque Evening Citizen encourages the Morning Journal to address a series of questions in order to keep “what little self respect it has.” The list of questions to be answered includes queries about the Bursum case, corrupt prison practices, and the alleged corruption of New Mexico Governor Herbert J. Hagerman.

The President in the South

The President in the South

President Roosevelt’s determination to hire civil service workers based on merits rather than political motivation has alienated the party machine and lost him support in the South. In particular, Roosevelt’s focus on civil service reform has led to the removal of many unqualified party machine appointees, including many African American workers. These same actions, however, have won Roosevelt support elsewhere, and no one is likely to oppose him successfully for the Republican nomination for the presidency in 1904.
