Many Republicans from southwest Virginia are opposed to the present state organization. Gillespie believes they will be open to the movement suggested by John S. Wise.

Senator Hanna had no interest in the Alabama judgeship but had to recognize the demands of the local Republican organization. He has stated to them that he will take no further action. It would be helpful to Hanna if the appointment of Thomas B. Morton, J. H. Bingham’s successor as collector of internal revenue, was issued.

John S. Wise requests that H. P. Brooks be removed from the list of names he submitted to President Roosevelt. Brooks has recently become “dissipated.” Roosevelt’s efforts in the South have revived Republican hopes in the region.

Jacob Yost would be pleased to take part in a movement for the “upbuilding” of the Republican Party in Virginia. However, Yost recommends delaying the movement until after the election and encourages everyone to support the current Republican ticket.

Due to E. A. Webster’s death, Senator Hanna has written to Secretary of the Treasury Lyman J. Gage recommending L. W. C. Blalock as collector of internal revenue. District Attorney John G. Capers of South Carolina will take Webster’s position on the Republican National Committee.

A. M. Dickenson is impressed with the enthusiasm of the rank and file Republicans of Virginia, but political leadership is lacking. The state leaders seem more interested in retaining what they have than in bringing Virginia into the Republican fold. Dickenson urges John S. Wise to look into this matter.

Fred H. Rowe, chairman of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee, spoke on the state of Illinois politics and the relationship President Roosevelt has with the state. Roosevelt is well known in Illinois and has a working relationship with Governor Yates. Rowe is hopeful that Roosevelt can help bring together the factions of the Illinois Republican Party.

Leslie Combs is pleased that President Roosevelt was selected to be vice president by the “choice of the people” and not for political or geographic considerations. Combs has been working with a faction of the Kentucky Republican Party to attract certain Democratic voters and is being opposed by Senator Deboe. He would like to discuss the situation in Kentucky with Roosevelt.

John Avery McIlhenny introduces Francis Bennett Williams, chairman of the Republican State Committee of Louisiana, to President Roosevelt. Williams is working to build up the Republican Party in Louisiana.
