E. W. Hampden describing the uprising at the 1912 Republican Convention in Chicago and the gathering of signatures of protesters pledging allegiance to Theodore Roosevelt. The Louisiana Republican State Central Committee called for a convention to nominate a state ticket but will select delegates to the Republican National Convention at a later date. The committee’s plan appears to be to capture Democratic votes with a “white basis” state convention and then only later offer African American representation to the national convention.

Walter Reeves asks Senator Cullom to inform President Roosevelt that a resolution endorsing Roosevelt’s administration and nomination was passed by the Republican Convention of the 12th Congressional District of Illinois. Reeves and Colonel Ellwood will represent their district in Chicago and he is certain that Illinois will present a solid delegation for Roosevelt.

Letter from Lunsford L. Lewis to Theodore Roosevelt

Lunsford L. Lewis consults President Roosevelt about whether he should attend the Republican National Convention as a Virginia delegate. If he were to do so, he would resign as district attorney. He believes that the president’s interests are better served by his remaining in his position and not becoming a delegate. Lewis also discusses the possible replacement of the current Chairman of the Republican State Committee, Park Agnew, Collector of Internal Revenue, with a non-officeholder.
