Letter from Secretary of Theodore Roosevelt to J. B. Lloyd

Letter from Secretary of Theodore Roosevelt to J. B. Lloyd

On behalf of Theodore Roosevelt, his secretary writes to J. B. Lloyd that he has not seen the articles, but he has seen excerpts that were so “ludicrously false” and dishonest that they “could not possibly deceive any man who was himself both honest and intelligent.” Roosevelt answers legitimate criticisms, but he does not answer certain magazines and articles since doing so would only give them publicity.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Frank M. Chapman

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Frank M. Chapman

Theodore Roosevelt writes to Frank M. Chapman about the Popular Science article and a criticism of Roosevelt’s “Appendix E” by Thayer, in a letter to the Tribune. He also finds Chapman’s Trinidad article very interesting and disagrees on several points about the birds of Trinidad, although he concedes that Chapman’s experience and training is greater than his own. Roosevelt further discusses his arguments about the coloration, cover, behavior, and habit of birds in the United States, Africa, and Latin America. He thanks Chapman for the interest in his article, thoroughly enjoyed his visit the other day, and will take his notes on the galley sheets into advisement. He returns The Awk and Osborn’s copy of Nature. In the addendum, Roosevelt answers Thayer’s criticism in the Popular Science magazine.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Oscar K. Davis

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Oscar K. Davis

Theodore Roosevelt thanks Oscar K. Davis for what he said in the article, but he clarifies that “is by no means certain that I would not refuse the nomination even if it came to me unanimously.” He feels it is an academic argument, however. He would like to know if Davis will be in town over the summer so he can introduce him to some of The Outlook people over lunch.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Charles Doolittle Walcott

Theodore Roosevelt writes to Dr. Charles D. Walcott about Congress’ refusal to appropriate the necessary monies for mounting of the larger animals and birds.
