He also suggests Roosevelt making a “survey of the globe” and writing for Century. Gilder informs Roosevelt that Robert Underwood Johnson will be attending the conference on conservation on behalf of the magazine.

Letter from John St. Loe Strachey to Theodore Roosevelt

John St. Loe Strachey, editor of The Spectator, asks President Roosevelt if he can dedicate an upcoming pamphlet to Roosevelt, a collection of letters printed in The Spectator on the dangers of socialism. By dedicating the pamphlet to Roosevelt, Strachey hopes to show people that enemies of socialism are not de facto in favor of unrestrained capitalism, as Roosevelt occupies a position between both extremes. Strachey thanks Roosevelt for a message Roosevelt sent through Arthur Hamilton Lee, and says that A. Maurice Low is a disgrace to journalism. He plans to send Roosevelt a paper that will be read at the Pan-Anglican Church Congress on the Ethics of Journalism.

Ernest Harold Baynes, on behalf of the American Bison Society, asks President Roosevelt to write a small statement on wildlife conservation. The Society will be featured in an upcoming issue of Country Life in America, and Baynes thinks Roosevelt’s words would have a big impact on their efforts. Baynes also writes to say that the the Society is doing well, and is considering several sites for the establishment of bison herds.

Ambassador Reid sends President Roosevelt a copy of a letter he sent to the publishers of The Smart Set magazine in acknowledgement of a bound set they sent the president. Reid thinks the set was sent in order to get an endorsement from the president, and he sent a cool response to discourage any such outcome.

In a recent interview with Everybody’s Magazine, President Roosevelt stated that William J. Long’s account of a wolf hunt was inaccurate. Long has included an affidavit from an eyewitness to the contrary, and hopes that “as a gentleman you will retract your accusation.” He plans to have an open letter on the matter printed in “every important newspaper in this country” the following day.

Letter from William H. Taft to Theodore Roosevelt

Secretary of War Taft has received President Roosevelt’s letter and agrees with Roosevelt’s thoughts about who to appoint to fill the circuit judgeship. Taft sends a copy of a speech to Roosevelt for suggestions and makes some remarks about its contents. He also notifies Roosevelt about a “sinister article on the Philippines” that has been published in Collier’s Weekly. Taft also encloses a letter on Panama he had received for Roosevelt to read.
