A new initiative: Theodore Roosevelt Association scholarships

David Architzel describes the launch of a combined scholarship effort between the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and the Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation to provide scholarships to dependents of those who are or who have served on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Architzel explains how the scholarships will be funded and administered, and his report lists the names, majors, and universities attended of the first group of scholarship winners. The scholarship recipients are featured in individual photographs and in a group photograph with Architzel and Paul W. Parcells, both former commanders of USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Report on the 80th annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Norfolk, Virginia, onboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, and at Pine Knot, Theodore Roosevelt’s retreat in rural Virginia. The report details the annual dinner, noting its ceremonies and speakers, including the conferring of the TRA’s Junior Officer of the Year Award for the USS Theodore Roosevelt and recognizing John A. Gable’s twenty-five years as Executive Director of the TRA. The report highlights the association’s visit to the aircraft carrier, including an air show and the results of the various TRA elections for members of the Advisory Board, Board of Trustees, and Executive Committee. The report provides brief biographies of some of those elected to various capacities, and it highlights the presentation of Theodore Roosevelt’s naval flag to the USS Theodore Roosevelt for display in its museum.

In an address to mark his election as Chair of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), Tweed Roosevelt lays out his plans for the association, and he acknowledges the contributions of several members of the TRA’s leadership who have assisted him and the TRA during a difficult period in the association’s history. Roosevelt announces that he will focus on retaining and recruiting members of the TRA and that he will use his background in finance to improve the TRA’s fiscal condition.

A grand day aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt

William N. Tilchin describes the Friends and Family Day Cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on May 30, 2009, which was attended by hundreds of members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). Tilchin notes the dinner and speeches of the evening before the cruise, and he relates some of the areas of the ship he visited. Tilchin also describes the air show provided by two fighter jets from the carrier. 

Eighteen photographs populate the essay, including fourteen taken during the visit of the TRA to the carrier.

Lembeck discusses the work of the bust’s sculptor, Bruce B. Everly, and he notes some of the naval officers in attendance, including a past and present commander of the ship. Theodore R. Kupferman and Dorothy Horton McGee obituaries

Obituaries for Theodore R. Kupferman and Dorothy Horton McGee which examines their careers and community service, especially to the Theodore Roosevelt Association, which Kupferman headed as President and McGee served as a member of the Board of Trustees. Kupferman’s obituary highlights his brief political career, his tenure as a Justice of the New York Supreme Court, and his work with the Layman’s National Bible Committee. McGee is remembered as the Town Historian of Oyster Bay, New York, for her numerous books, and her love of sailing.

Three photographs supplement the text. In addition to photographs of Kupferman and Theodore Roosevelt, a third picture shows five crew members of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, including three of its commanders.

The Bertha B. Rose Award of the Theodore Roosevelt Association

Report on the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s Bertha B. Rose Award. The report includes a biography of Bertha Benkard Rose that emphasizes her work in historic preservation, especially at Sagamore Hill. The report also includes brief notices about the twelve past winners of the award dating back to 1982, and it highlights the work of the 2003 recipient, Michael L. Manson. A text box lists all of the winners of the Rose Award, and the report also includes a list of the seventeen colleges and universities that granted Theodore Roosevelt honorary degrees from 1899 to 1917. A paragraph on Roosevelt’s history with New York City concludes the section.

The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt appears as a subject in four of the six articles found in this edition of the “News & Notes” section. Paul B. Madden recalls his visit to the ship as a twelve year old; the carrier won a coveted award from the U.S. Navy; and GreenPoint Financial Corporation made a large donation to the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to support the ship. “News & Notes” also discusses the origins of Theodore Roosevelt’s use of the term “bully pulpit,” and it notes the 2001 winner of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize.

The 76th Annual Meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) took place at Norfolk, Virginia, as well as onboard the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. The Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal was presented to former Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman. The TRA also gave several gifts to the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, and held its meeting of the Board of Trustees. One prominent topic during the Board of Trustees meeting was about the future of Pine Knot–the Virginia cabin of Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt.

Other news items include the presentation of a number of Theodore Roosevelt-related awards, such as the TRA’s annual police awards, the appearance of Theodore Roosevelt on several television programs during 1995-1996, reports on several TRA-related activities like the annual teddy bear distribution, and an obituary of Dorothy R. Kidder. At the end of this section is a selection of several Theodore Roosevelt-related facts, including the names of the Secretaries of the Navy during Roosevelt’s presidency, and Roosevelt’s appointments to the Supreme Court.

Roosevelt Naval History Prize and the results of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) Public Speaking Contests. The section also notes the seventy-fifth anniversary of the death of Theodore Roosevelt and the birth of the TRA, and it highlights the naming of a new commanding officer for the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Updates on Pine Knot, the TRA Journal indexing, and the need for volunteers at both Sagamore Hill and the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace are noted. Highlights of the meeting include the presentation of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to the members of the Rio Roosevelt expedition team; the conferring of the TRA’s Bertha B. Rose Award to Paul Whitney Parcells; and the inauguration of the TRA Junior Officer Leadership Award for a member of the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. This edition of “News and Notes” begins with a summary of the events, elections, and speeches at the seventy-first annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) which included the selection of Robert D. Dalziel as the twelfth President of the TRA. The report includes a listing of those elected to the Board of Trustees as well as brief biographies of the past presidents. “News and Notes” also details the conferring of annual awards and prizes supported by the TRA including: natural history research grants from the American Museum of Natural History; the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public schools; the TRA Police Award for the New York City Police Department; and the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize. The section also notes the passing of Archibald B.
