Ready to tilt with Vatican

Edward A. Lancaster, Member of Parliament for Lincoln, Ontario, outlined a bill to amend the Marriage Act which will make a marriage in one province valid and binding in all other provinces. No decree, ecclesiastical or otherwise, can dissolve a marriage performed by any recognized ceremony. This amendment is aimed at combating the Ne Temere Decree, in which the Pope stated marriages must be performed according the canon law of the Church in order to be valid.

Letter from Henry E. Huck to Theodore Roosevelt

Henry E. Huck reports to Theodore Roosevelt that he finally got away from the sanitarium at Guelph, Ontario, and is currently safe in Detroit, Michigan. However, Arthur Heurtley will not help him, even after Huck shared how letters were stolen and that the sanitarium’s attendants were anarchists who harmed Marshall Field’s heirs. He sends a paper slip and does not think the American consul reported on it. Huck asks Roosevelt for help with the Field estate and to be admitted to a sanitarium, not an asylum. He would have reported the mail theft to Governor General of Canada Albert Henry George Grey but did not have the money or protection to get to Ottawa, Ontario.

Henry E. Huck is going ahead with his plan to send his proclamation to each international consul. He asks Theodore Roosevelt to write if he thinks there is a chance of damaging relations between the United States and England. Huck’s sister will not take him to England, suggesting he go to a sanatorium in the United States. He thanks Roosevelt for sending the flag with a crucifix. He plans to publish the march he wrote and asks for feedback on the title page design.

Letter from F. V. Greene to Theodore Roosevelt

Francis V. Greene of Niagara Lockport and Ontario Power Company lets President Roosevelt know that he approves the passing of a bill regulating power companies and power production. The bill that Greene refers to concerns the use of Niagara Falls for water power and also concerns the preservation and conservation of the waterfalls. Greene mentions that he met with Canadian officials to discuss this matter and found out that Niagara Falls was not the main focus of the Canadians. Instead, they were more concerned with other bodies of water.

Based on painting by Henri-Paul Motte that depicts Rome being saved from an attack of the Goths by squawking geese, in this cartoon “Lobbyists” are ascending the city wall around “Ottawa” and handing bags of money down to be delivered to two men, wearing top hats labeled “Protected Trust.” The building tower is labeled “Reciprocity” and the squawking geese are kept in an enclosure labeled “Independent Press.” Caption: As the geese saved Rome, publicity will save reciprocity.

Acting Secretary of State Loomis responds to a letter from Senator Thomas Collier Platt. Platt has suggested that James H. Worman, the unpopular consul general at Munich, be transferred to Ottawa to fill the vacancy left by John L. Bittinger. However, Loomis explains that the vacancy has already been filled by Alanson W. Edwards.
