President Roosevelt is glad to hear from Fitzhugh Lee, who is missed as “Master of Horse” and family friend. Roosevelt gives an update on Ted Roosevelt and Kermit Roosevelt’s career and education, respectively, and on Archie Roosevelt and Quentin Roosevelt’s school lives. Roosevelt is proud of Lee, and looks forward to hearing more from him while he is at the cavalry school.

William H. Taft has replaced Elihu Root as Secretary of War. President Roosevelt will miss Root and is concerned that Taft is too much like him to provide good advice. Roosevelt believes that Ted Roosevelt can succeed in civilian life and would be sorry to see him enter the military. However, the army is “well and good” if Ted is convinced of that path. They can discuss the matter over Easter break.

Letter from Carl G. Grill to Theodore Roosevelt

Carl G. Grill explains his situation to and asks for help from Theodore Roosevelt: he is a veteran of the Spanish-American War who has been working as a transfer clerk in the railway mail service in Aberdeen, South Dakota, but has moved to Oregon to benefit his wife’s health. Grill was told it was easier to resign and seek reinstatement than to be granted transfer service, so he resigned, but is facing difficulties with getting reinstated. He lists cases of others who have been successful in similar situations and asks for Roosevelt’s assistance.

Alice M. Murray met Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt when she was working as a waist fitter. She lost her job when the firm closed down and now works as an assistant engraver for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. However, the job requires her to be on her feet and her doctor has advised her to give it up. She asks if Roosevelt can use her influence to secure her a promotion or transfer to a job where she would not be on her feet as much.
