Natalie A. Naylor offers a detailed survey of the contents of Cove Neck: Oyster Bay’s Historic Enclave and less in the way of analysis or scrutiny though she admits that the book demonstrates “the value of local history.” In her review, Naylor demonstrates how the book places Theodore Roosevelt’s life at his home, Sagamore Hill, in a larger context of his neighbors and relatives who lived nearby in the village of Cove Neck. Naylor relates information about numerous Roosevelt family members and highlights the prominence of Sagamore Hill to the history of the area.

Four photographs, a drawing, and a map, all taken from the book, join the work’s front and back covers in illustrating the review.

William Emlen Roosevelt informs President Roosevelt, his cousin, that he has received a favorable judgment in a case involving his right to a dock that was in conflict with Oyster Bay’s construction of a highway. He plans to join many other people in applying for a grant of land extending from the shoreline from the state and asks the President if he would like him to arrange the same for him. William Roosevelt mentions his family’s summer travel plans.

Roosevelt hopes to complete five speeches before his visit to the Jamestown Ter-centennial, when he can take a short break.

President Roosevelt likes Albert Shaw’s proposal for an article in The Country Calendar, and encourages him to write the article himself from Alexander Lambert’s notes. Shaw can use any of Philip Battell Stewart’s photos not needed by Scribner’s. Roosevelt asks that the article be confined to his “country life” at Oyster Bay, as he is writing an article about the hunt in question for Scribner’s himself.

Sarah C. Provost, Elizabeth S. Sherman, and Ella G. Stewart ask Theodore Roosevelt to contribute to the fund for purchasing a bronze tablet memorial for the late Samuel V. W. Fleet. He served faithfully as a trustee of the Oyster Bay school district for thirty years. The memorial will remind students that a simple life with strict adherence to duty is admirable and worthy of remembrance.

Frank W. Pearsall posits that if organizing a Young Men’s Christian Association in Oyster Bay is unwise, there are other ways to ensure the local boys grow up to be good citizens.
