Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt are very moved by Thomas Chalmers’ letter. Roosevelt inquires if Chalmers has seen the article he penned in the January 1916 issue of Metropolitan Magazine. He would like to meet Chalmers in New York or arrange for him to come to Oyster Bay.

Theodore Roosevelt would like Langdon Elwyn Mitchell to spend a night at Sagamore Hill, along with Thomas Robins, Owen Wister, and Dr. White. Roosevelt agrees with Mitchell’s view about President Woodrow Wilson and Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan and would rather have Boies Penrose in their place while also believing William H. Taft to be just as bad as Wilson and Bryan. Roosevelt asks Mitchell if he has read Roosevelt’s book America and the World War.

Theodore Roosevelt knows that the blackbird was really a black thrush. He wishes it could be naturalized here. Roosevelt is glad that Richard Henry Tierney remembers his article on English birds. In the ninth chapter of his autobiography, Roosevelt speaks of the birds around Sagamore Hill.

Theodore Roosevelt expresses his pleasure to Belle Roosevelt at hosting her and Kermit. He hopes that they have reached South America, as sea travel is dangerous because of the First World War. Roosevelt does not know what outcome will be reached but is increasingly impatient with the attitude toward the war of the United States government. He believes the Progressive Party to be at an end and his own chances in his libel suit to be small on account of the electoral victory of Republicans connected to the party machine. In addition to these opinions, Theodore Roosevelt sends Belle news of his other children.

President Roosevelt is glad to have met Joseph Culbertson Clayton, but asks him not to come to Oyster Bay during Roosevelt’s vacation, as he does not wish to discuss official matters there unless absolutely necessary. Roosevelt will be very glad to see Clayton in Washington in the fall.

President Roosevelt will start reading about socialism himself, and until he does, does not think it would be worthwhile for James Creelman to visit. When Creelman does visit, Roosevelt asks him to call on him in Washington, D.C., rather than at Oyster Bay, as Roosevelt already has to fight to have any free time while he is at home at Sagamore Hill.

Roosevelt also remarks on the business of a telegram between him and Charles William Eliot that was somehow published. The telegram was meant to be private, and Assistant Secretary of State Robert Bacon originally wrote it.
