Jacob Riis outlines life for the Roosevelt family. He describes the personality, habits, and even pets of each child. Riis also discusses the parenting style of Edith and Theodore Roosevelt. The article, later published in the August edition of Ladies Home Journal, gives readers an idea of what life was like for the Roosevelts in the White House.

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit after their return from their African hunting trip to say he is sending Kermit’s rifle to him in Paris and it has been very difficult getting everything from the shipping company they used to send materials home from Africa. Roosevelt is not looking forward to his trip through the country and speaking engagements but he wants to work until he is sixty if that is possible. He says Ethel Roosevelt is planning a Western trip and Archie Roosevelt has been helping him around Sagamore Hill.

President Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to update him on plans for their trip to Africa and encloses letters from Frederick Selous, Edward Buxton, and Reginald Wingate. He talks of celebrating Ted’s birthday and spending time talking with him. He closes by saying Archie is back at school and Sagamore is being closed up for the season.

President Roosevelt reminds his son Kermit that under no circumstances is he to extend his trip because he must be back at Harvard by the 30th. He says he and Mother took their last row at Sagamore Hill and then invited Oyster Bay to the house to hear a delegation of German singers. Roosevelt closes by saying the Winchester rifles have arrived but they were all sighted wrong.

Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt are in New York City and spending time with the families of Ethel Roosevelt Derby and Ted Roosevelt. Roosevelt’s libel suit is next month and he is unsure of the result. However, he believes his case will be “presented in great shape.” The Royal Geographical Society has published the maps from the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition and hostile comments against the expedition have died down. Roosevelt has been working hard at Metropolitan Magazine.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit about the libel suit brought against him by William Barnes. He wishes it were a criminal instead of civil suit because he would much prefer to go to jail than to take back what he said. Roosevelt has been staying with Horace S. Wilkinson, whom he describes at length, during the trial. Edith is at Sagamore Hill recovering from her surgery.

President Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit to tell him about his trip to the Jamestown Exposition on Georgia Day, where they built a reproduction of Roosevelt’s grandfather’s house as the Georgia State Building. He also congratulates Kermit on the performance of his crew team at Groton School.

President Roosevelt writes his son Kermit about life at Oyster Bay for with the family. He says he is working on speeches for his Mississippi trip and meeting with Admirals Brownson and Evans about the navy’s trip to the Pacific. Roosevelt acknowledges that his policies have caused an economic downturn but he will not alter his course. He closes by wishing Kermit well on his prairie chicken hunting trip.

President Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit to let him know that he found his missing guns at Sagamore Hill. Roosevelt talks of spending time with Edith and how much they love the White House, but look forward to returning to Sagamore Hill after his presidency ends. He closes by talking about Archie and Quentin, what he has been reading, and work on his message. Roosevelt hopes to visit Panama after the election.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to Henry H. Saylor, editor of Country Life in America, regarding an issue that featured Roosevelt’s home, Sagamore Hill. Roosevelt requests a photo of his house that was featured in the magazine and describes in detail the building process and interior of the house.
