Comments and Context

Cartoonist John Scott Clubb and other Democratic cartoonists were wary of Theodore Roosevelt’s presidential ambitions in 1916. Roosevelt was widely criticized for his “Preparedness” advocacy, and thus depicted as a war-monger. Woodrow Wilson, the incumbent, based his own campaign on the slogan “He Kept Us Out of War.”

First day of issue envelope and stamp of Sagamore Hill. The stamp is green with an illustration of the Sagamore Hill house. On the left side of the envelope is a similar black and white illustration of the house. Above the house is an illustrated portrait of Theodore Roosevelt. The envelope is addressed to E. B. Scharpf of Buffalo, New York.
