“He loved the soaring spirit of man”: The life and work of Hermann Hagedorn

John A. Gable describes in detail the life and work of Hermann Hagedorn, historian, biographer, and long-time Director of the Roosevelt Memorial Association and its successor, the Theodore Roosevelt Association. Gable covers Hagedorn’s life as a child of German immigrants in Brooklyn, New York, his education and teaching at Harvard, and his early career as a writer and poet. Gable traces Hagedorn’s leadership of the Roosevelt Memorial Association over nearly four decades, discusses his many publications on Roosevelt, and looks at his other writings, including a number of biographies and many works of poetry.

Two photographs accompany this article. One is a formal portrait of Hagedorn and the other shows Hagedorn with President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the dedication of Sagamore Hill in June 1953.

Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal – Winter-Spring, 1976

Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal – Winter-Spring, 1976

This issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal very much reflects the late 1970s in which it was published (in this specific case, 1976). The issue contains five articles that note the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s (TRA) production and distribution of eight documentary video cassette tapes that feature historic footage of Theodore Roosevelt formerly available only on old reel film. Much space in this issue is also devoted to the TRA’s efforts (along with other government entities) to undertake an urban renewal revitalization project in the neighborhood of the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site in New York City. The issue also notes the politics of the time as it features remarks made in the House of Representatives in October 1967 by Michigan Congressman Gerald R. Ford who became President of the United States in August 1975 following the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

The cover photograph of this issue shows Old Orchard, the home of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., the eldest son of President Roosevelt, on the grounds of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Oyster Bay, New York.

Stewart L. Woodford relays a letter he received from Japanese Consul-General Kōkichi Mizuno regarding Admiral Heihachirō Tōgō’s anticipation of lunching with Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt had previously invited Tōgō to visit him at the White House, but Tōgō was prevented from doing so because of his duties as Chief of Naval Staff.
