The sixtieth annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) was held at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site on October 27, 1979. The article details the various reports given by the leadership of the TRA covering topics such as the state of the association’s finances, the election of officers and committee members, and the surge of interest in Theodore Roosevelt as evidenced by the many new books published about him in 1978-1979. The meeting concluded with talks by historians Edmund and Sylvia Morris about their biographies of Theodore and Edith Roosevelt.

In the context of President Jimmy Carter’s work negotiating a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, William C. Sexton reviews President Theodore Roosevelt’s mediation of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and argues that Roosevelt’s actions set the table for future presidents to act as peacemakers. He looks at Roosevelt’s actions during the negotiations, reviews some of his administration’s other accomplishments, and says that advances in technology like those pioneered by the Wright brothers added to America’s power and prestige.

Ethel Roosevelt Derby 1891-1977

Obituary for Ethel Roosevelt Derby, Theodore Roosevelt’s eldest daughter, written by John A. Gable. Gable quotes from various newspapers reporting her death, describes the funeral service, and lists the all male pallbearers. In addition to naming her siblings and her own children, he describes Ethel’s service in World War I as a nurse and her long years of service to the American Red Cross. Gable details her work with the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and her role in preserving Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.

 

Three photographs accompany the obituary: one shows Ethel Roosevelt as a child at the White House in 1902; another shows her with First Lady Rosalyn Carter at the White House in 1977 and the third shows the entire Theodore Roosevelt family (along with Congressman Nicholas Longworth) at the White House in an undated photo.

Gable discusses the publication of two books on Theodore Roosevelt.  Sagamore Hill: An Historical Guide was published by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and Memories of the American Frontier, a collection of Roosevelt’s writings on the American West, was issued by the Westvaco Corporation. Gable notes the individuals and organizations that helped bring both works to publication. He mentions that author David McCullough visited the offices of the TRA, and he closes with more tributes to Ethel Derby Roosevelt who died on December 10, 1977.

Reprint of an article originally published in the New York Herald Tribune which describes the dedication ceremonies at Sagamore Hill in June 1953 which featured an address by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The article names some of the prominent guests, quotes from Eisenhower’s brief speech, and describes some aspects of the ceremony such as the presentation of a flag and flag pole for the historic site by the Boy Scouts.

Remarks by President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the dedication of Sagamore Hill as a historical site in June 1953. Eisenhower read a proclamation declaring a “Theodore Roosevelt Week” in the United States, and in his brief remarks he challenged the stereotype of Roosevelt as an impetuous leader, saying that he was “not a swash-buckler,” and that he engaged in “patient work.”

Guide to thirteen different sites associated with Theodore Roosevelt from historic homes to national parks and small towns. Many of the sites are administered by the National Park Service. The directory names each site, gives a brief description and history, and provides directions for visitors.  

 

Photographs of the front of the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site and of the equestrian statue of Theodore Roosevelt in front of the American Museum of Natural History, both in New York City, accompany the guide. The statue was removed in January 2022.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association: A brief history

History of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) that highlights the role the TRA played in preserving Theodore Roosevelt’s homes in New York City and Oyster Bay, New York along with Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington, D.C. The TRA later transferred all of these historic sites to the National Park Service. The article covers the TRA’s work with Harvard University and the Library of Congress in collecting and preserving  papers, books, and film on Roosevelt, and it covers the Association’s support of natural history grants awarded by the American Museum of Natural History. Many of the books either published or supported by the TRA are listed. The past Presidents and Directors of the TRA are listed, and aspects of the TRA’s governance and finance are noted.
