“The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt”

Article on the documentary “The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt” which provides a history of the production of the film and lists its producers and actors, including members of the Roosevelt family. The article also discusses the role of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in making the film, especially that of its Executive Director, John A. Gable. It also covers the many different kinds of films and filming techniques used in the production of the documentary. Most of the article consists of reviews of the film found in twelve different newspapers from across the United States.

A photograph of Theodore Roosevelt used in the film, a recreated scene of the Roosevelt family at Sagamore Hill, and a photograph of Gable in a cameo role supplement the article. A listing of the officers of the TRA along with the members of its executive committee appears on the fourth page of the article.

This edition of “News and Notes” features an obituary of Jessica Van Ausdall Kraft who served as the personal secretary to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, Curator of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, and in various roles with the Theodore Roosevelt Association. The section also explains the decision of Harold and Sheila Schafer of Medora, North Dakota, to found the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation to run the various motels and shops in the tourist town formerly run by Harold Schafer’s Gold Seal Company. “News and Notes” closes with an announcement about a new musical, “Teddy and Alice,” which depicts the life of President Theodore Roosevelt and his daughter Alice Roosevelt Longworth in the White House.

Much of this edition of the “News and Notes” section revisits and elaborates on articles published in this issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal. “The TR Exhibit at the Johnson Library” quotes from the remarks made by William Davison Johnston, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), at the library, notes the gifts given by the TRA to Lady Bird Johnson, and promotes the exhibit’s catalogue. The section also provides excerpts from a letter written by the leadership of the TRA to President Ronald Reagan thanking him for visiting the graves of General Theodore Roosevelt and Quentin Roosevelt in June 1984, and it notes that this issue of the journal is dedicated to Jean Schermerhorn Roosevelt.

The section also touches on some of the awards given to high school students by the TRA and highlights talks on Roosevelt presented at Lamar University in Texas and at Sagamore Hill. It also revisits the TRA Police Award ceremony in New York City and cites the contributions of Paul Russell Cutright and the National Geographic Society to the article on President Roosevelt’s conservation record.
