Shonts suggested naming the completed interoceanic canal in Panama the Roosevelt Canal. President Roosevelt writes his son Kermit about a poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson and encloses pictures of Roosevelt and Ted jumping their horses. President Roosevelt tells Kermit Roosevelt not to worry about his marks not being as good as he wanted. Roosevelt went to New York for two days and made a speech on the race question and visited the East side. His exercise has mostly been in the form of boxing, and he will see Kermit in twelve days for the inauguration.

A newspaper article speculates on who will be named the postmasters of New York City and Washington, D.C. In New York, postmaster Cornelius Van Cott died and the office is vacant. It has been reported for some time that President Roosevelt does not intend to reappoint John A. Merritt as the postmaster of Washington, D.C., despite Merritt having support from Senator Thomas Collier Platt and the late Postmaster General Henry C. Payne.
