Martin J. Keogh, New York State Supreme Court Justice, invites Theodore Roosevelt to preside over an upcoming meeting of the New Rochelle’s People’s Forum. The forum was started to allow the people of the city to have a chance to hear prominent people lecture on various topics. Gifford Pinchot, former chief of the U.S. Forest Services, is speaking on February 19, with his talk being titled “The Report of Progress.” Keogh would like Roosevelt to come on that date.

John A. Gable provides a comprehensive report on the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in 1979. He details the TRA’s support of Bulloch Hall in Georgia, Youngs Memorial Cemetery and the adjacent Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary in Oyster Bay, and the American Museum of Natural History. Gable also reports on the association’s support of student essay and speaking contests, additions to the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project. He closes with an assertion that the United States is “in the midst of what can be called a ‘Roosevelt revival'” given the rise in membership of the TRA and the publication of a number of significant works on Roosevelt in 1979, most significantly Edmund Morris’s The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.

He notes the scholarship of Sylvia Jukes Morris and Frederick W. Marks, and he details the outcome of the annual Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) essay contest at the New Rochelle, New York high school. He closes the “News and Notes” column with a plug for the TRA Journal and an invitation to join the association.

Executive Director John A. Gable gives a comprehensive report on the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) during 1978. He notes an increase in both membership and contributions, and details the day-to-day work of answering phone and letter inquiries about Theodore Roosevelt. In addition to covering aspects of established programs like the student essay and speaking contests and support of research grants made by the American Museum of Natural History, he details the programs surrounding the twenty-fifth anniversary of Sagamore Hill as a public house museum, the TRA’s support of Bulloch Hall, the home of Roosevelt’s mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, in Roswell, Georgia, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project.

Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) John A. Gable provides an update on the various projects undertaken by the TRA in 1976 with an emphasis on the expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt holdings at Harvard University. He notes the establishment there of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial, and he gives an update on the revitalization project underway in the neighborhood surrounding the Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Site in New York City. Gable promotes the reissue of Roosevelt’s biography of Gouverneur Morris, and he lists the various clubs and organizations he spoke to in his role as Executive Director of the TRA. He notes the receipt of four letters from Roosevelt to William T. Hornaday which the TRA has added to the Harvard University Roosevelt Collection.

Katherine J. C. Carbille speaks about the life and legacy of the German-born colonist Jacob Leisler. Leisler purchased land that the Huguenots settled which became New Rochelle, New York. Leisler eventually became Lieutenant-Governor of New York before being executed for treason. His name was later cleared and now he is honored in New York.

Margaret Sanger writes about her nationwide speaking engagement tour about birth control and family planning. Sanger discusses events and responses in various cities. She indicates that in St. Louis more people came to hear her speak than had come when Theodore Roosevelt and William H. Taft spoke in the city. Sanger accounts various arrests related to obscenity laws and the distribution of birth control pamphlets.
