A new branch of the Roosevelt Savings Bank recently opened in Massapequa Park, New York on September 21, 1974, accompanied by a variety of festivities. The article highlights the appearance of Roosevelt impersonator Joseph Early and the Roosevelt artifacts and pictures displayed in the bank.

Botanist Roland M. Harper describes the Hempstead Plains of New York, which he characterizes as a “geographical curiosity.” Harper discusses the relatively treeless area’s location, as well as the species that are present there, and theories for why this type of landscape might be present there.

Frank G. Holly writes to President Roosevelt about the New York Republican Party’s position concerning the legislation and taxation of liquor. He tells the president that Republicans are “sliding from the ranks” and that an increase in the tax by the legislature would be the “last straw.”

The Harbor Line Board recommends that the proposal to extend a pier head line in the Hudson River along the Chelsea Improvement be denied. This extension would not be in the public interest as it would “diminish the navigable capacity of the North River and be obstructive to navigation.” The proposal offers “no compensating advantages to the public at large.”

He is trying to get some work done before a lecture series but is not enjoying Long Island without President Roosevelt in the area. Winthrop Chanler is glad President Roosevelt had the opportunity to see John Henry Twachtman’s painting, “Yellowstone Pool.” Chanler describes in detail a humorous fox hunting adventure. He concludes with informing Roosevelt that although Alastair Gordon-Cumming has requested that Chanler recommend him to be chief clerk of the State Department, Chanler has refused as that is not something he regularly does.
