Report on natural and historical resources of the area proposed for establishment as the Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The Region Two Office of the National Park Service analyzes the potential for a national park based around the North Dakota Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch site. They conclude that the North Dakota Badlands do not possess “resources of sufficient national significance to justify establishing a part of them as a national park,” and recommend that the area continue as a national wildlife refuge under the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Letter from Charles L. Davis to George W. H. Davis

Letter from Charles L. Davis to George W. H. Davis

Charles L. Davis, superintendent of Sullys Hill National Park, encloses for George W. H. Davis a report from Secretary of the Interior Ethan Allen Hitchcock which will shed light on the park’s status. Davis notes that Hitchcock did not request appropriation for the park. He believes that the North Dakota delegation should demonstrate more interest in the park and makes the case for the park’s importance. It has geological and historical significance, and with the right financial support it could become a popular recreation site for North Dakotans.

Letter from Rogers C. B. Morton to Richard M. Nixon

Secretary of the Interior Morton makes formal recommendations to President Nixon to preserve land for Theodore Roosevelt National Park. After making a review of the land, Morton believes preserving this land will fulfill the ecological and environmental imperative pursued by the Department of the Interior. Certain areas without roads are further designated for conservation. Morton also notes the inclusion of a report from the National Park Service, a draft bill incorporating the above stated areas, and a draft environmental impact statement with the letter.
