The Verendrye National Monument research has been completed and reviewed. Regional Director Baker offers several suggestions for the future of Verendrye National Monument and proper recognition of the Verendrye explorations.

The National Park Service currently administers the Verendrye National Monument in North Dakota and is not prepared to support the establishment of another Verendrye historic site near Fort Pierre, South Dakota. They are willing to share information with local supporters of the project in South Dakota.

Forest Supervisor Barrett informs Gifford Pinchot that it will not be possible to survey the area under consideration until summer due to the snow, but makes several recommendations about areas that the government should reserve as monuments. Physical examination of the area may give more precise coordinates of the areas to be reserved.

Secretary of Agriculture Wilson sends Secretary of the Interior Hitchcock copies of three reports regarding the proposed Lassen Peak National Park. While a satisfactory examination of all the points was not possible, the reports show the importance of the various sites and describe the major areas of interest. The Forest Officer who made these reports, Louis A. Barrett, recommended that these sites be made individually into National Monuments, rather than declaring the entire region a National Park due to the scattered nature of the sites, and the possible complications of declaring a National Park within a National Forest. Wilson therefore recommends that they be designated National Monuments as quickly be possible, which will protect the sites while also not precluding the creation of a National Park at a later date.

Forest Supervisor Louis A. Barrett has closely studied the Lassen Peak region, and recommends a number of points of interest to be set aside as National Monuments. None of the areas he recommends will interfere with the stock or lumber interests of the region, but are likely to be areas of significant tourist interest. If these areas are reserved, provision should be made to improve the roads and trails of the area for easier access.

President Roosevelt agrees with William Kent that it is enough to do the deed without seeking recognition. Roosevelt writes that is good for him and for his sons; Roosevelt hopes that his sons will do the same by his name.

The National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs has taken action to support S. 4295, which amends the act creating the Mount Rushmore National Monument to include Susan B. Anthony.

J. S. Cullinan feels that his recommendations made at the last Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission meeting were largely ignored. He also believes that the fifth clause of the contract for the Pageant of the Americas, outlining the purposes of the creation of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission, has also been ignored.

Gutzon Borglum regrets to hear of Representative Greenway’s illness. He is planning for a sub-committee to go over entries for the Mount Rushmore inscription competition. Borglum suggests members for the sub-committee and requests Greenway’s input.

Fred W. Sargent advises Representative Greenway of an upcoming meeting of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission in Chicago, Illinois. The meeting will address a new contract for Gutzon Borglum.

Gutzon Borglum outlines the parameters of his original contract, his struggles to amend the contract with the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission, and what he feels he should be paid in light of the multiple difficulties that have slowed progress on the monument. In spite of the current situation, Borglum vows that he will continue working on the monument until completion, whether or not he is paid what he believes he is owed.
