National Grange

Theodore Roosevelt thanks his sister for her letter and writes that he enjoyed seeing Theodore Douglas Robinson at the Harvard Club and is glad that he joined the Grange. Roosevelt asks if his sister has written to General Bell, who is ready to go abroad. Roosevelt also admires Anna Roosevelt Cowles’ “heroic spirit” and mentions correspondence he has received updating him on his family’s activities.

Fairbanks references Roosevelt’s letter of November 11, asking for Fairbanks’ assessment of Aaron Jones for Assistant Secretary of Agriculture. Fairbanks is in favor of Jones.

President Roosevelt tells William Barnes he is unable to appoint G. Howard Davison as assistant secretary of agriculture because of the “emphatic protest” from the National Grange, founded to advance the methods of agriculture. Due to so many different suggestions for the position, Roosevelt told Secretary of Agriculture James Wilson to select the best man and he chose W. M. Hays for the position.

President Roosevelt tells Senator Platt that he did not understand that the Assistant Secretary of Agriculture position was so important to farmers until the National Grange objected to the appointment of G. Howard Davison whom they feel is not a true farmer. Roosevelt has asked the Grange to make recommendations for the position, preferably from New York. He discusses a couple of Grange members he would have liked to appoint but for the fact that one was a Democrat and one was from Indiana.

George W. Oster writes to Theodore Roosevelt with the hope of inviting him to attend the Granger’s Picnic of Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They expect large crowds to gather, and would be delighted to have Theodore Roosevelt address them, as the county gave Roosevelt “an overwhelming majority for President.”
