Letter from Sophia A. Preusch to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Sophia A. Preusch to Theodore Roosevelt

Sophia A. Preusch was inspired to write Theodore Roosevelt because she opened a dictionary at the word “delightful.” She says she saw Roosevelt during his 1910 parade in New York, and supposes he has read about her, describing herself as a troublemaker. She inquires after Oyster Beach, talks about museums, and sends well wishes to Roosevelt’s family.

News and notes….

News and notes….

This edition of the “News and Notes” section features a report on an exhibition entitled Theodore at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum. The report lists the various entities that donated materials to the exhibition, quotes from the catalog introduction written by John A. Gable of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), and notes some of the other exhibitions hosted by the Johnson Library. Readers are also reminded that two documentary films about Roosevelt, My Father the President and The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt, are available for sale. The report provides more information about each film as well as contact information to enable purchases.

“News and Notes” also highlights the lectures and appearances of Gable and TRA President William Davison Johnston at various schools, notes the passing of Jean Schermerhorn Roosevelt, and praises the work of Nicholas LaBella, the Superintendent of Youngs Memorial Cemetery in Oyster Bay, New York. This issue of the Journal is dedicated to LaBella. The section closes with a reminder that there are still aspects of Roosevelt’s life that need study, and it declares that the TRA is open to helping those who wish to pursue this work.

Two photographs are found in the section: one of Roosevelt standing in the back of an open car and another of LaBella. A detail of the Roosevelt photograph appears on the front cover of this issue.

The Theodore Roosvelt Gallery at Harvard

The Theodore Roosvelt Gallery at Harvard

Wallace Finley Dailey, Curator of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, describes in detail two exhibits of Theodore Roosevelt material on display in the Theodore Roosevelt Gallery in the Nathan Marsh Pusey Library in 1977. One exhibit covers Roosevelt’s long relationship with Harvard University from his undergraduate student years to his death. The other explores Roosevelt’s relationship with his daughter Ethel Roosevelt Derby. In both exhibit summaries, Dailey quotes extensively from Roosevelt’s letters and speeches and provides descriptions of the photographs used in the exhibits.

Three photographs and one illustration accompany the article. One photograph shows Dailey examining the exhibit display cases. Another shows Roosevelt with a group of his Harvard classmates, and one shows Derby at the White House in 1902. The illustration is a drawing by Roosevelt’s classmate, Charles G. Washburn, that depicts a monument detailing Roosevelt’s many activities at Harvard.

Letter from Paul L. Beaubien to Russell Reid

Letter from Paul L. Beaubien to Russell Reid

Regional Archeologist Beaubien writes to Russell Reid, Superintendent of the State Historical Society of North Dakota, to tell him of the discoveries that his archaeological dig made at the Elkhorn Ranch site, including evidence of several of the buildings. Beaubien is working on a preliminary report of his findings, and would like to include a picture of a painting of the Elkhorn Ranch. He wonders if Reid would be able to get him prints of this photograph, and if he knows the history of the painting.

Negro at the world’s fair

Negro at the world’s fair

Arguments were given in support of including a Negro exhibit at the World’s Fair. Hale G. Parker believes including this exhibit will not only increase gate receipts but also “affect public opinion on the mental and industrial status of the negro.” Parker believes Negros will be able to identify more with the World’s Fair if it includes exhibits that highlight their “progress since emancipation.”
